And if a DJ is taking a gig away from bands, it is only because the bands are not as entertaining as said DJ. Fans are essential in this business, so to survive you have to keep them happy. If you feel threatened by a DJ, you should find out why people prefer the DJ.

AS YOU KNOW I ALWAYS WANT TO SEE PEOPLE REACHING A PEACEFUL RESOLUTION TO THEIR ARGUMENTS. WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS A COMPARISON OF APPLES AND ORANGES. MANY LIKE I JOINED ROCKPAGE BECUASE WE THOUGHT IT A PLACE WHERE MUSICIANS AND BANDS WOULD GET TOGETHER , TALK TO EACH OTHER , PROMOTE THEIR SHOWS, AND DISCUSS THE WORLD OF LIVE MUSIC AND MUSICIANS. PERHAPS I WAS WRONG AND APPARENTLY SOME OF THE PEOPLE POSTING HERE WERE MISLEAD ABOUT THE PURPOSE OF ROCKPAGE. I HAVE A LOT IN COMMON WITH THE ACTUAL MUSICIANS AND SINGERS AND I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE A PLACE TO COMMUNICATE . I AGREE THAT THERE IS TOO MUCH BICKERING ABOUT SUBJECTS THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH LIVE MUSIC. [IE ]POLITICS, FOOTBALL, ETC ETC. HAVING SAID THAT IF I'M IN THE MOOD I'LL EVEN TAKE PART IN THOSE DISCUSSIONS. IT CAN BE FUN. SO PERHAPS WE SHOULD START A PAGE FOR DJ'S AND KAREOKE PEOPLE. MAYBE WE COULD INCLUDE THE BALLOON ARTISTS , FACE PAINTERS BIRTHDAY PARTY CLOWNS , AND MY 100 YEAR OLD GRAND MOTHER THAT CAN TURN ON A RADIO AND CONSIDERS HERSELF PART OF THE MUSIC COMMUNITY. AH ONLY KIDDING !!! AGAIN ITS PARTY NIGHT UP HERE IN THE MOUNTAIN . DON'T TAKE YOURSELVES SO SERIOUSLY. PLEASE GO TO www.ababyboomerslookback.com . after all If we take the time log on we might as well promote ourselves. and thanks to rock page all and all its members because it works for all of us. jerry c / white shadow / beatlemaniacs

this is why people don't post as much here anymore. is this the best subject we could come up with to talk about?

don't take this the wrong way, but i find it a little amusing that a board with mostly cover band musicians are complaining about DJ's. what difference does it make? regardless of your product, if it is a quality perfromance...you're gonna get booked. i really hate to even say things like this, because i don't want to open the dreaded "covers vs. originals" thing. but in reality, if a band is chosen for entertainment, it's usually a cover band unless the party/wedding/etc hires an original band that plays a style they like. if the event planning calls for a DJ, i don't see it as a slap in the face to musicians at all. sometimes it is just easier to deal with a local dj...they have devoted a lot of time and energy into doing events so the people who pay for those events can just enjoy it. that doesn't mean a band can't or shouldn't do events, but i would make sure they are professional enough to not be late or get too fucked up to play. human error can be a killer i suppose.

it would be interesting to see the rate difference between a DJ, a cover band, and a pretentious cover band...especially in these frugal times.

Just an aside... there aren't any bluegrass DJ's, so I no longer have to deal with them. :P
Of course, there aren't any bluegrass groupies, either.  --->JMS

Ok! I'll take the flames! I don't think DJ's should advertise on Rockpage. We just got pre-empted by a DJ for our Sept. 18th gig at Pelly's. Private party of 150 people, didn't want a live band, so sorry guys we gotta go with the crowd! It is what it is.
I thought RP is a forum for live music? Dj's have lots of sites so stay off this one! On the other hand being that I am almost 62, I started DJ'ing weddings hoping to build up my business for when I retire and can't lug my drums around anymore. Oh, BTW, don't tell anybody that I DJ. You'll never catch me advertising on here! It's so embarrassing!

Apparently NONE of you that disagree have read the rules to rockpage! NO-WHERE does it say that ONLY live musicians are aloud on rockpage or to post on rockpage!!!!! THANK YOU!! It's free of charge to take a look at the rules. Don't be so lazy to look them over or is it just that you guys ALWAYS want something to disagree about??? You guys are the ones that have the most post and I can't believe you NEVER looked over the rules!!

Regardless of the rules, we are aloud to express our opinions of DJs.

DJs do not play music, they play recordings.

Well on that note, Just like a few post ago, Both make money on SOMEBODY ELSE'S MUSIC so what differance does it make??? You guys usually even get paid more! But who wants to pay $600 to watch a band play songs there own way instead payin $200 and hearing the exact version there used to hearing? If you didn't know, there is quite a few venues that look here for bands to book because certain places are looking for certain music on certain dates, so I directed them here. I don't have contacts with all the bands here so I directed them to the site instead. Many do come here frequently as I stay in touch with them. So it's not all LIVE bands and pissed off musicians that complain about everything that gather here.

The number 1 thing that turns people away from this site is all you guys that bitch and complain about every topic!!! You guys call it expressing your opinion but under it all, it's called bitching and complaining!!

I am a LIVE MUSIC all the way person!! I am a licensed booking agent for many bands and national bands at that! That is just the facts and the way that it is but I CAN'T believe it is this big of a deal to some of you people!! If DJ'S are taking over the few places that you play or something of that, give me a call! I will be glad to help you get into other places! DJ'S do make my job harder sometimes but I just move on to the next place and not dwell on that place that wants a DJ for that date! Would you feel better if it was a band taking away your shows?? Probally not, it would make you guys even madder!!

Next u know DeeJays will be advertising for press packs and playing local music on Sunday nights. And maybe someday one of them might even go as far as wanting to be moderator (perish the thought).

Can't we all just GET A SONG???

I don't mind the discussions other than music...the forum is GENERAL DISCUSSION, after all. And some people here are friends with each other and use it as a means to keep in touch. Some threads are friends poking at each other, and other people don't understand it and fall into a bitching session about people bitching, when they're doing it on purpose. Learn to understand sarcasm...typed words can't denote emotion or expression so you take it at face value, 'cuz the little yellow faces don't always mean shit.

This is the law of open forums...so let it be written, so let it be done...

But there is rules that are supposed to be followed that seems the certain friends your talking about don't like to follow and get away with not following! that's NOT fair to the rest of the rockpage community!!! Life isn't fair but they shouldn't use a public website to gang up on people!

Just like the post saying DJ'S should go elsewhere, So shud this group of people that gangs up on the outsiders that just come here to check out bands and once in awhile they post an opinion. Then they get bombarded from this group of people that seem to run rockpage and also run people off this site cause they act like this is there own personal site! That AINT cool! This is a music and music related site but the same ones that complain are the same ones that have done the same thing in the past. Talking about EVERYTHING else that's not music related! Click on some of these people with thousands and hundreds of post and you will find alot have posted things in the past and now there complaining about others that are now posting the same opinion!

Its not that the Rockpage Crew dislikes new people, its that all of this shit gets brought up on a regular basis, newbies just don't know it.

I've long since given up on voicing my opinion of the direction rockpage is going. It is what it is. Currently for me its the classifieds that keep me coming back. That and waiting for JP to post his latest review of my band.

P.S. Saturday we played a wedding with a DJ. You should have seen the earth being rent in twain!! The sky turned black and all life on the planet ceased to exist!

Actually it was awesome. The DJ did all the wedding crap that we would have probably done a crappy job of anyway, and then we played after all the old people left.

Excellent idea, sir!

I think this debate is pointless. Generally people putting together a gathering will know right away whether they want/need to go with a DJ or a live band and seeing an ad for one isn't likely to change their mind about wanting to hire the other. Also, if your band is tight, dedicated and plays good music, you should be getting plenty of jobs. I honestly don't see DJs advertising here as a problem from that standpoint.

However, it does make me wonder what would happen if musicians advertised on DJ oriented sites, but ultimately it doesn't really matter what the rest of us think. It's up to the people who own Rockpage to decide.

Yep!

I've been coming to Rockpage since it went from the guestbook format to the forum format. Every once in a while, someone makes a thread about how he or she thinks Rockpage should be changed (having a non-music general discussion forum is always a topic that gets brought up). A bunch of people come after and agree. Ron's not running a draconian web forum here, but it's not a democracy either. There have been very few - if any - instances in which Ron's made a major change to the site due to user solicitation.

But yes, Rockpage has surely changed since I first started coming here. Originally, there were a lot of pro and semi-pro musicians posting, along with sound engineers, promoters, venue oweners, and fans of local music. Now, the dominant posters seem to be a lot of people not really associated with local music and hobbyist musicians. Is that good or bad? Well, it's up to each individual to decide. I like the original vibe of Rockpage, but I'm not one to dwell in the past and long for the good ol' days.

I thot that was worded pretty good bassist_25! From what I have heard from a good many people, those pro and semi-pro musicians and many other people have left rockpage because of all these postings that people just put on here that is non-sense and people just picking on other people and just people complaining! My b/f has been a member of rockpage since 2003. I used to just check the site out but there was 1 particular subject that made me decide to sign-up and voice my opinion a few months ago!

Your right, I am not a professional or even in a band. My b/f teaches me bass and maybe I shouldn't be 1 of the 1's on here but as long as these people are posting things that are completly wack and even I know better then what they are saying, I can't help but to post things that make more sense then what they are posting. When I am corrected, I do admit it also. Not too many people do that here.

There's a place for everyone. I really don't mind DJ's, sure they are in it for the money and to have a good time, but I know a lot of bands that play for the same reason. I'm just as happy playing in my basement as I am out in public, because I love to play. Anyway, if you are a good band, you should have no trouble getting a gig. I've never worried about a DJ stealing my crowds, because they are a different crowd anyway. Hell, I've played a few shows where we shared times with DJs. Is that confusing? haha
