PLCB strikes again

Post by 4daysdirtyjoe »

last night at peter c's 3 bands played, it was a normal night and everyone was having fun. enough fun for a woman to take her shirt off. well one did and the funny police showed there badges and everyone and everything stopped. big john got a fine and we decided to give him all of the money we all made to help pay for the fine. i myself have been part of 2 shows that they have ruined. its got to come to and end there needs to be a line where we both come to an understanding. its there job but for us its our life. any thoughts or insight would be fucking awesome. im about ready to start something and i want to see things resolved and understood. i want to know if there is anyone that has some advice, cause i have phone numbers and im not afraid to call em up. what do you think...............

We (Voodoo Chrome) opened for Bad Hair Day last night at Crowbar, which gave me the chance to ask them about similar problems in their hometown area of Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. Dave, their drummer, told me he hasn't heard of ANY such problems in that area, and I haven't heard of any in State College, either, to which Dave said, "Of course not. They are going to come into State College - there's too much payola going on here." Interesting comment, I thought. But more interesting is why is this only a problem apparently in the Altoona / J'town area?

I dissagree there has only one bar in Johnstown area shut down due to plcb and that bar does not even have bands anymore!!! I have been trying to open everybodys eyes to come and play up in johnstown there are a few great places to play (and knock on wood) the plcb dont even worry about the local bars becasue the houses arround the bars deal with the music and dont complain about how loud the music

Gotta say

Post by tornandfrayed »

I was at Peter C's the other night to see 4 Days Dirty and I have to say.. There must have been an undercover cop in the place. We watched the young lady (term is used loosly) dance the night away and then begin to disrobe. It was like a bad car wreck, you didn't want to see it but you could not turn your head! The police arrived right after she took her shirt off! Coincidence? I think not! I have a feeling that the cops are trying to bust some people for other things and maybe the music is just an excuse to get in. Just a thought.....

By the way, 4 Days Dirty, you guys really rocked! Good material! Good choice of covers! Good show!

State College doesn't get noise violations because there are very few people over the age of 30 living in downtown SC., and very few bars located in the middle of residential areas.

No complains, no PLCB noise busts.

You know, sometimes ladies' shirts come off in this business. Sometimes it's a good thing, and sometimes.........well, it's not a good thing. It seems to be more of not a good thing rather than a good thing, but I digress.

Either way, the chick should have been busted for indecent exposure, and then that would be the end of the story. It seems like the Barney Fife's are looking for any stupid excuse to come in and put a damper on the club scene. If only the government understood that bars are TAX PAYING entities just like any other business, and when you stiffle business, you are stiffling that sweet tax dough.

I vote that we make a movie about our plight in the style of Foot Loose. It will be a film about some bands trying to put on shows in a highly conservative, cop-happy community. old sKool would fill the role of Kevin Bacon, the sensitive but mysterious guy who just moved into town. One of the movie's climaxes will be a game of chicken in which old sKool is pitted against one of the ass-hole townsfolk while riding Lawn Chief mowers. I can't think of a better way to make people more aware of our situation than with a block-buster movie.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

i cant wait to see what happens this saturday. i think that we have been used as pawns in there little game. it seems that our shows seem to get busted and all we are doing is playing music and making people dance. i am seriously thinking about taking our schedule off of the website so those sneaky funny police cant see where we are playing or find out unless they ask around. its sad and i wish there were other places our band could play but altoona is the only town that will take in a new band, we just got the chance to play in state college and its on christmas day at the last cowboy now known as the arena. lets hope there is some payola happening there because if they show up again i am seriously going to dedicate all of my free time to figure out a way to bust them........damn they disturb me

lets do the movie i want to be in it too

Hey Joe, you better try to be careful on this issue man...I know that you have some people of "lesser age" in your band. Keep a heads up, I wouldn't want anything bad to go down man. Keep Rockin!!

Tom, if you were at a certain Bad Daze show a few months ago, you would have to reconsider that stance. *shudders*

I hear ya. As you pass a bad car accident, you think, I'm not gonna look... I'm not gonna look. You look. I saw an 80+ year old woman at KMart once, on the hottest day of the year... see-thru top... no brassiere. Ask my wife, she was there and saw it too... the image was permanently etched into my corneas. My God. Merciful God, why do you torture me with this horror? I was all post-traumatic syndrome for a long time after, and had to self-medicate. The Thousand-Yard Stare. The Thousand-Yard Chinese-Eyed Stare.

plcb and alot of talk

Post by Billy »

Well here we go again. Billy of the Inmates here again!! Well people,I have suggested several times that we get s gig together and raise some cash for some serious lobbying against the Gestapo. The bands have to be let alone. Bad enough they hassle the owners of the clubs /But dam man they are takin it to the band leaders. Too much talkin and not enough action. Bitching gets you nowhere. Gotta get together and use our talent to make a difference.Contact me at bilchi@aol.com if ya want to do something besides complain. You all work too hard and give too much of your lives in music to suffer this kind of bull. Lets fight!!!!

i'll tell you what you need... someone working on the inside. you want this problem taken care of? you get someone inside the organization and have a handle on things. you scratch their back, they scratch yours... whatever that means. To beat something, sometimes you have to stoop low and suck it up.

It would be nice if the bar/club owners in PA had some type of organization, or do they? If not, then that is ultimately what is needed. I think that it would be a very hard battle to fight without the bar owners being organized and ready to fight also. It really is their battle because they are under the thumb, and musicians are simply another victim of the PLCB/bar owner struggle.

A strong legal team is what we need, and without major funding of some type, we will always be the underdog. Unless of course, we can get our local senators and reps to help our cause.

A few years back I was talking to Tommy Rhodes (owner of The Palace). He was involved in some sort of organization like what you are talking about. I don't know if it ever got off the ground or if it still exists. I usually run into him during riding season, but that seems like it is going to be a long way away. Does anyone here ever get down to the Palace - maybe we could ask him about it.

One other thought here: I was thinking on the whole concept of raising public awareness about our problem and I want to play devils advocate here. Public awareness could hurt us!! For instance: My grandmother lives across the street from a bar that has bands and djs every weekend. She hates "all the racket coming out of that beer garden across the road", but besides complaining about it now and then - that is it.

What if?? she heard about our problem with PLCB and realized that some phone calls are all she needs in order to get better sleep on the weekends??? I think there are a lot of people out there that don't realize this and we may be better off that way.

I think raising the awareness of the folks out there that like to go out and listen to music is great - but getting the news stations and whoever else involved to spread the word could actually work against us.

Any thoughts?

Good point... if some people knew they had ammo, they'd shoot a lot more. Something should be done, though. This is one of those situations where, if we give an inch, they'll take a mile. The Moral Majority has their chests all puffed up because they think morality won the election ("leading" exit poll question came up with that tidbit, but I digress), so they feel powerful now. They changed TV and radio because they thought they saw Janet's boob (pasties are BAD, snuff films written by crazy 14th century nuns are GOOD), and they've tasted blood. This all happened with Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson in the 80's, and it's happening again. I've said from the beginning that it's political, in fact, Tommy Rhodes told me about the Tavern Owner's Association 10 years ago, when they were citing places for having the beer signs on AND for NOT having the beer signs on.
I asked people to send me details on these "violations" so I could compile them... to date I have received exactly...none. When the time comes to point out exactly what's happening, it will be dismissed as hearsay.
Please PM me with the place, date, supposed violation, and problems it caused. Facts are paramount, right now, it's our word against theirs, and in case you haven't noticed, the squeaky wheels are getting the grease.---------->JMS

This doesn't have anything to do with the election or the moral majority. The PLCB gets it marching orders from the Governer. Last time I looked, it was a tax-and-hell-raising democrat sitting there.

As you may know, I have been involved with this problem from the get go. The guys at Beer Bellies are old friends of mine and when they 1st got nailed for noise a few years back, I suggested they put in an air-gap soundproofing wall, which they did. That is a hell of an investment, but it is drop-dead quiet on the back side of their building that faces the residential area. I seriously doubt that any resident can hear anything from the bar now. So why do the LCE still harass them? Because they feel like it.

From the sounds of it, we have a rogue LCE division in the the Blair County area that is hell bent on generating revenue. Somebody with clout needs to tell this unit commander to call off the dogs. Somebody like a state senator, representative or county commissioner.

Abuse of power in Blair County? Its the rule, not the exception.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...

Sorry, guess I should have been more clear... I was talking about the constituency, the local old folks who want the bars gone. The complainers.
There is also a segment of people who want to be rid of places they don't deem "nice." They only attend classy upscale places where they can hobnob with others in their own social circles, where they can make deals, and only have to see other "beautiful people." The entertainment there is the TV over the bar, or karaoke. They see you and I as something less than themselves, and a corner bar as an eyesore frequented by the dregs of society. What sucks is, they get to make the rules, because they have the money. F*ck that.
Combine all this with recent headlines shouting about stabbings and shootings at local bars that don't even have bands, and Christian self-righteousness and moral indignation, and we're standing at the bottom of the hill looking up.---->JMS
