Who is the strangest group you ever heard ??

Post by f.sciarrillo »

As title says.

I would have to say the strangest group I have ever heard is Nightwish. I got their cd "tales from the elvanpath" This group is a mixture of opera with metal, it also has a little bit of goth overtones to it. I telll you the musicianship is outstanding. These guys can play... It is a little to get used to. But it grows on you ..

You can get more info about the band from here: http://www.nightwish.com/english/

nightwish isn't really that weird though. i admit it is an unusual listen, hearing organs and distorted power chords over screams and such is crazy... but mainstream enough to be played on the radio.

the weirdest band that you may have heard of (because i'm sure there are alot of bands that try to be so weird that it isn't even considered music) is THE RESIDENTS. These guys are nuts.

dress up with eyeball heads, no one knows there real identity or names, creepy vocals, weird music, but they have their act together. they've influenced bands like Primus. these guys are far from normal.

The most unusual group I've heard was the Asylum Street Spankers, If you don't know who they are they wrote the Pussy Cat Song that was banned from Bob and Tom. I saw them at the Folkfest in Johnstown about 3 years ago, they were talented, entertaining and very funny. I can't even give a justified description but it was early influences using instruments you never new existed with a sick sense of humor. Has anybody else seen them?

Nightwish is awsome. Everything they have is powerful. Anyway, Weird to me is the Blue Man Group- Odd people, odd instruments, odd talent, but still cool w/out being too nutty.

Also, this brings another thing to mind- Has anyone ever heard the backing band behind the Cirque du Soleil ? They are talented. Next time you see the Cirque du Soleil on TV, give a listen. Its good stuff!

The original weird group. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

Anything from a barbershop quartet about acid to tales of dogsleddery, they covered it all.

Has anyone ever heard of a little band called Mr. Bungle? How about Secret Chiefs 3? Another crazy album by a somewhat respected artist: Brian Wilson's Smile.

Tom Waits has the most f'ed up band of all time. This music actually gives me nightmares. If you want to have the crap scared out of you...pick up a copy of "Blood Money". Rumor has it that the band brought a semitrailer full of instruments into the studio for this album. It is messed up circus/tribal/carnie music. Mule Variations and Bone Machine are also messed up.
If you're looking to get into something new, and are into deep lyrics...check out Waits.

Also, Nightwish rocks!
My favorite band can do better unison solos then your favorite band.

My favorite "strange group": Zodiac Mindwarp And The Love Reaction. Trippy-assed lyrics, great rock music. This guy is OUT there. For the uninitiated, he co-wrote "Feed My Frankenstein" off the "Wayne's World" soundtrack with Alice Cooper.

Back in the 80's, I thought Sigue Sigue Sputnik was pretty strange. Their first album even had commercials on it between songs. Also a band called Pop Will Eat Itself were a little weird.

Of course, neither are probably all that strange anymore by today's standards.

Strange groups? Hmm, I usually go searching for these, so I may have an advantage.

Mr. Bungle
Secret Chiefs 3
The Blood Brothers
Captain Beefheart
Butthole Surfers (early stuff)
Fantomas

I'll post more when I think of them...

Zappa
Mr. Bungle
Fantomas w/ Mike Patton
Candiria - metal, hip hop, ambient
Ornette Coleman - free jazz
Mike Keneally - quirky, not too strange but a phenomenal talent
Fishbone
Don Caballero - instrumental prog punk?
Salty the Pocketknife - Screech plays bass, female vocalist, hard but with odd times all over the place
Mars Volta - from the Ashes of At the Drive In, best stuff I've heard in 10 years! Accesible but the lyrics are very strange.
Primus
Buckethead
King Crimson
Photek - drum 'n' bass
Wine of Nails- shameless self promotion

I was listening to Delirium Cordia by the Fantomas a few weeks ago.. Mike Patton is great with Faith No More and Tomahawk, but what was he thinking?! an entire album of noise and atmospheric sound?!!!

Yeah Primus is pretty strange. I forgot about gwar and zappa. Zappa I think is probably the king of strangeness. Then if you ever listen to UmmaGumma from Pink Floyd, that is strange also - Pipers at the gates of Dawn was strange as well ..

Right Said Fred....
TOOL and Rammstein have great tunes...but the lyrics in both groups are sooooo fugged up! (don't get me wrong, I love them both).

Prince was scary in a hott sort of messed up scary way.
Culture Club.
Meshuggah had some cool songs, but watching them at a concert.... the lead singer was pretty strange/scary. really turned me off of them after seeing that.

And Beyond Reason. Dude! Have you seen the guys that sing and play in that group? I've had nightmares days after they've played....
