Saying that is the only way Neil Young makes list. Technically, even Neil admits he sucks. Read book "Shakey", the guy is all about experimenting with sounds, moods, recording techniques. His favorite backing band (Crazy Horse) was preferred because of their LACK of technique.

I don't think this is really a valid topic as stated, since it's really impossible to term anything as "best". There are so many genres of guitar playing. It's all about personal preference. Every guitar player listed here has pros and cons, and if one doesn't prefer the music, one may not realize how good a guitarist is. For example, I don't know jack about Trey from Phish, since I'm not a fan of theirs, and have only ever heard one Phish song. So saying someone is "the best" is really a misleading term. Perhaps the question should be "who are some of your favorite guitarists and why?"...

For me, here are some of my faves on the national scene: Stevie Ray, Hendrix, Jeff Healey, Jerry Cantrell, of course "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Kerry King, Satriani, Eric Johnson, Dave Murray (Maiden), Angus Young, Malcom Young, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt, Dave Mustaine, Chris DeGarmo, George Lynch, Tracii Guns, Pat Metheny, Duane Allman, Dweezil Zappa.

Locally I enjoy Felix Kos, Greg Larrimore, Johnny Stevens (cause he's a goof), Michael J Cox of HF1, Phil Wagner (Banditos/Cucuplex), Kenny Murdick (Bad Daze), Ed and Jeff (Scream), "Big" Jim Ricotta and Ronny D (Half Tempted), Rick Ramsey, Richy Johnson, Eric "Fat Vinny" Kelly, Tony Mollick, Rick Wertz, and Randy Jackson. That's just a partial list.

This is a tough one. Because there are soooo many great ones. Here's my 2 cents...

1. Yngwie malmsteen...yeah, he's that damn good!

2. John petrucci...can play any scale, any key.

3. Stevie ray Vaughn...amazing soul and feeling...we miss you!

4. Al DeMeola...the skill of the top 3 with his own interpretation.

5. Van Halen....the guy is amazing...need i say more?

6. Jimi....because he influenced everyone.

7. Carlos Santana....the guy created his own style.

8. Eric Clapton....he is what he is.

9. Slash....straight up feeling and beauty in his leads.

10. Jeff Wallack...the biggest guitar freak i ever worked with!

Neil Young? Neil Young should be outlawed from playing electric guitar in the United States. He sucks like an 12 year old that just got his $79 guitar package from WalMart. I can appreciate his acoustic work on albums like Harvest, but he shouldn't be allowed to strap on an electric without supervision and only in the privacy of his own home.

ZappasWife, a Neil Young fan, agrees with lonewolf wholeheartedly. Its funny, NY and Bob Dylan are my 2 favorite songwriters but Neil should not be playing guitar in much the same way Bob should not be permitted to sing. Or give interviews.
Both both should keep writing...
Check out website RobDrummer spoke of, very interesting. Some surprises (Comfy Numb all spliced together? Thats like saying Santa isn't real? He is, isn't he?). And Robin Trower is that bad? This list on a website touting new OutKast CD...Hmmmmm
Other entries certainly valid, songs I (thank god) forgot about.
A better assessment of bad guitar solos should have featured many eras, not just the late 70's and 80's which was a bad time for rock music. A wider timeline would have made it much more interesting, we know most of that other stuff was crap.

Whoever wrote the 50 Worst list, they seemed familiar somehow. No mention of overall vibe, boasted that he could do better, didn't care who else might have liked the solo, knew better than anyone else, very self-important...uh....oh...

Thats funny and true, his vocals too. He needs someone to tell him " thats Ok but don't try to sing any higher........... wait right there ......... quite it ......... dammit Neil you just can't sing that high "
