were is a good place to live?

Post by onegypsygun »

My wife and I have had enough. There is nothing here for us. But our problem is we are unsure of were to move to. We'd like to be some where that has stuff to do and see, but mainly it's needs to have a music scene. I am a strong blues guitarist and singer.( I like the blues but have played everything.) Were we are there are no more players... and it's killing us. I don't want to live in a city but i don't want to be in the middle of nowhere either. Any suggestions?

New Orleans. The music scene there is like no other. Also Atlanta has a kickin' scene.

I was looking more or less for somewhere in Pa. I'm kinda limited to that right now.

As much as people bitch and complain, I think Altoona and its surrounding area has a great music scene.

So on that note, Hollidaysburg?

Austin and New Orleans are great for music - but DAMN! The heat!
If I was gonna move anywhere else it would be Asheville NC. The scene is really great there.

Here, in PA? York is AWESOME. Great downtown area and the music scene is really good. Friendly people too.

But I love Home! Last night's love at Thirty Something at the Eye Rock for Leah Benefit is a big reason! Thanks, Felix, Bobby & Jeff for lettin' me jam!!! Love ya!

I'm not too far from Asheville. I may have to check it out.

From a business point of view, I gotta disagree.

Blair county has changed from being venue-centric to band-centric. In the past, there were venues that were built for live entertainment that would get a weekend crowd no matter who was playing. Management consistently provided quality bands that their clientele liked, whether they were well known locally or not. When a well known name was there, they would get even more people. This is the model you will find in State College and in larger cities.

Today, venues rely almost exclusively on band name recognition to fill their seats. Since it takes many years for a band to develop that kind of notoriety and most bands don't even last a year, venue owners don't have many band choices to fill their seats.

Of course, we all know the Fun Patrol committee consisting of the BLCE (noise), PADOH (no smoking), and law enforcement community (DUI) have joined together to make this business a tough road to hoe. Sometimes I wonder if these government workers want to kill the entertainment industry altogether. I'd like to see their paycheck determined by their name recognition and popularity.

I believe that until venue owners can somehow cultivate their own "following", I'm afraid the so-called scene will be bereft of variety and continue to decline.

To answer the thread question...If you like blues, find some high ground along the Mississippi.

Yep...and according to Chevy Chase logic, its already been pre-disasterized...twice!

Edit: Of course, you may want to wait until Washington's Idiot-In-Chief finally figures out that they need to send a deep-sea crew to the gulf and cap that well. Its been almost 2 weeks now. I wonder how much longer it will take them to figure it out?

+1

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do, project-wise, but when I get back to the Keystone State, I'm not looking for Central PA to be my bread and butter on the gig circuit. It seemed to be sinking right before I left, and I felt like I was jumping ship at just the right time. I don't know...maybe I have survivor's bias, albeit, a reversed kind of survivor's bias. *lol*

I'm looking more for a place with alot of musicians, more than somewhere with alot of places to play. Most of the players around here are gone. The younger ones DJ now, the older ones are dieing off. I always can find gigs everywhere so that's no problem. My bassist passed away 3 years ago, and it took forever to find him. I 'm not looking to be famous, that will happen if it's suppose too. I need players, I've been in bar bands playing every week for years and i'm dieing without it. In a place with players to choose from, I'd have a foothold to start.
