The difference in music between 1970 and today isn't the "shit that's on the air" or radio, it's more of the evolution of technology. More keyboards are being made that can mimic lots more sounds than the ones being built in the 70's. Also society as a whole changes from one generation to the next. It's how society has evolved from ancient times. I'm sure there was a lot of crap that was on the radio in 1970 as there is today. The only difference is the internet is big enough to help jump-start new artist careers where this wasn't the case in the 70's.

who the hell are any of these bands or whatever they are. I head OF the black eyed peas and lady gaga, the rest what the hell. Where the fuck did my rock go so i can crawl back under.
The script was written, and the villian was cast. The provocation needed, they will provide. They did it before, they'll do it again.

The biggest difference between music from 40 years ago and today is that 40 years ago, you had to have talent. Today is nothing but marketing and money ...
I agree that list of people from today will not be there in ten years. Heck, I would say even five years. Unless they are playing at county fairs, theme parks, some hotel in vegas, or low end clubs.

Just being Devil's advocate here, (I don't know who those people are either on list # 2), but I'm SURE our parents or grandparents would have said the same thing about list # 1. Of course history has shown that they did stand the test of time, but we should not be so sure that these other people will not still be around in 20 years. Although it does seem that the turnover of new musical acts is a lot higher than it used to be.
We do not 'get' the new music just like old people did not 'get' our music...you do see that, right? We.....are......OLD (?!)

I'm not old yet. But I do agree with the talent factor. These groups and individuals these days may rub me the wrong way the same way a lot of my parents' music back then rubbed their parents the wrong way, but the reasons aren't the same. The individuals these days don't play their instruments, and are strictly set to appeal in a more direct way
Also, I know that some of the acts from the 70's did use sex to sell, but it's not the same way as it is now. The sex factor goes deeper, and unlike the first list, that second list sells with a primary. Not to say that that first list didn't do anything that we'd question whether or not we'd want someone else's children to see... But that's the only thing that gets most of the second list anywhere. They wear scantilly clad clothing (the girls, anyway), they sing a lot about sex and sexuality in a straight-on manner, and in general,... They're promoted totally differently
Back in the 70's, most of the men wouldn't mind a couple girls running around in bikinis on stage,... But I'm sure they didn't take their rediculous attempts at singing while they were doing that as "music" either

Outside of Lady Antebellum on that 2nd list, the rest of those acts can't sing live at all. As far as playing county fairs, theme parks, some hotel in vegas, or low end clubs, those are the places we play.f.sciarrillo wrote:The biggest difference between music from 40 years ago and today is that 40 years ago, you had to have talent. I believe all of these groups are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was a good week. I think I eventually owned 8 of those at one time or another.moxham123 wrote:The Difference in Music over 40 Years

LOL at all the "lack of talent" posts...
Apparently they have SOME talent to even be offered a deal or a shot at a deal. Some of these posts seem to come off as penis-envy cause they're there, and you are not.
Music changes all the time. Look at Michael Jackson, when he split from the Jackson 5. His dance moves to many people were quite "vulgar" and any young'uns who wanted to imitate his hip gyros were probably slapped up-side the head for it. Same for artists like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Also, sex sells in this current market as it did in the 70's. The only difference is the sex is more accepted and not shunned as it was in the 70's.
There's a good bit of decent music both on and off the radio. Sit down, chill, and listen.

That is why I didn't say all of them. I agree that Lady Antebellum is a good group. But, I also think they are just a fad - Just like Sugerland and Miley Cyrus is. We will see though. You guys playing at clubs and the like is a step up. The people on the list is a big step down ..moxham123 wrote:Outside of Lady Antebellum on that 2nd list, the rest of those acts can't sing live at all. If you look at the majority of acts today, you see that they do just suck. Which I believe is one of the reasons the record sells are down to an all time low. The digital age is some of that, but if they would actually release music that was real and not full of studio enhanced mumbo jumbo, they might do better. The majority of the people in the music business today couldn't carry a candle to the people in the past. As it was said and it was said right - There was a murder on music row ...

... and then the wheel fell off.

The only group on that list that is still NOT in the R&R HOF is Chicago but they should be as far as I am concerned.undercoverjoe wrote:I believe all of these groups are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I agree with this to a point, but I dislike how much more 'image' plays a role in today's music than it did before.
Today:
Band Leader Dude: Well, everyone get your matching attire on, get in makeup, and be ready to start when the fireworks go off and we rise out of the stage.
Long Long Time Ago:
Band Leader Dude: Uh hey guys, we better stop drinkin and plug this shit in, Joe Cocker just passed out halfway thru his set and we need to get on stage asap.
Band Dude 2: I can't find my pants...
Band Leader Dude: Hah, cmon, no time...
Lol, i dunno, just ramblin...
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

As I remember, there was a lot of pop crap in 1970 in particular. Apparently, teens & tweeners existed then, too.
I was a kid, but listen to an oldies station, and oh Dear Lord...
I think the first list was kind of a lightning striking sort of deal, not a regular thing. That said, I know it makes me a curmudgeon, but I think very few of the people on the 2nd list have any staying power at all. I think Lady Gaga actually has the one thing Madonna always lacked: musical talent, but she's burning a little too hard. Ludacris is more of an actor. I'm not a Lady A fan, but they're playing the game okay... country radio is very faddish and fickle, though, huge stars from 5 years ago can't get arrested.--->JMS
