Dropping out
Dropping out
Whats with all the bars closing down. SO you got Legends-shut down, club java- not booking bands, the warehouse-not booking on friday nights, the Well-shut down. Now we are going to start to see more and more bands fight to play shows at the same venues. Unless there is a change of tide I can see a few more venues shutting down. Any thoughts?

Re: drunk
Ahh man, if we weren't musicians we could be making some sweet cash by doing that.Matt_22 wrote:I think the dui laws are so harsh people are afraid to go the bar at all if they don't have a ride. Bars and clubs need delivery people. Like pizza delivery but instead drunk person delivery.
Didn't Jeff Foxworthy once have a joke about taking drunk people home and making them pay to fill up your tank every 5 miles?

DUI, Attendance, and Such
I agree with the travel issue. There's really not a lot of "strip" areas outside of Pittsburgh and State College that allow people to bounce around to different places without driving.
In Lauderdale, you can split a $20 cab and bounce around all night and $20 home. With 4 people, $10 is worth not getting a DUI or worse yet, killing someone.
It's just not feasible to grab a Cab and check out several bands a night by bouncing from Y.P. to the Castle to the Wild Cherry.
A bar down here called the Parrot has a pretty cool idea. They actually bought an old Mini-bus and have a driver work on just tips. The Parrot bus cruises around and stops at different bars Thurs-Sat picking up and dropping off people all over (of course every 2nd or 3rd stop is always the Parrot!) I think works great for 2 reasons....
1. It's always a Party on the Parrot bus. People are always getting off it "hammered" and having a good time. New people are always eager to get on the bus to see what's going on.
2. It brings some of the southside patrons up to the north side without having to worry about risking a DUI or worrying about parking.
The bus driver told me, he actually makes close to $200 a night on the weekends, even in the off season.
I'm actually now banned from the Parrot Bus after talking him into picking up some of my Portage friends at the Airport (including Matt's cousin) and taking us around on my birthday. I guess we were a little out of hand. Good thing I don't drink anymore!
Another thing I always thought about is the D.D. , which I do a lot anymore (see above paragraph!) . Why aren't bars more receptive to D.D.'s? I understand that they aren't drinking and spending tons of money, but on the other hand, they usually bring a car full of people with them. I mean $2.00 for each soda??? Come on. I only know of one place that hooks up the D.D. At Beach Bums, if you get a D.D. bracelet, you get 10% discount on food and free refills on all soft drinks.
That could be an idea for some of the bars in PA that are off in the distance. I'd have no problem giving someone all the soda they can drink if they're paying the cover for the band, and bringing 4 buddies that'll be slamming the beer and getting into the music.

I'll give me opinions...DUI is hurting the bar scene and bands charging $1200-$1500 their first time around and drawing 50 people at a $5.00 cover. Bar owner's - wisen up - just because you get an agency band doesn't always mean you're getting a packed house. Give these local talented bands a shot. They pull better crowds and will probably save you at least $500 on expense. Plus some people just don't have a business bone in their body. Playing in filth and not having an inventory of alcohol also hurts...take note everyone...Jager Bombs are a damn hot item right now...stock up on Jager and Red Bull(you know what I mean Rake)!!! Look at the bars that are doing good...nice clean atmosphere...Castle Pub...kicks ass...why? Their bathrooms are cleanier than most eating facilities. It's well lit and offers something for everyone. Things are maintained and upkept. No leaky roofs, no piss covered leaking toilets, they have a presentable well-mannered staff. Other clubs to mention - Boomerang's, Fat Daddy's, Nick's Fat City, Boulevard Grill.
D.D. issue - The Warehouse in Bedford used to let them in for free. Not sure how things operate there now...probably still the case...good idea too!

I think the DUI issue primarily affects the larger clubs that count on a crowd to travel. The smaller bars seem to be doing fairly well where they hace a clientel within a short distance. I think people figure there is less chance of trouble if you are only traveling a couple miles.
I would have to agree with Jaybird that some of the prices the bars are dishing out for the agency bands is crazy. I've heard a few of them over the past few months and I'd say that most of them are OK but nothing fantastic, they do however play for the crowd and they do a good job of making the crowd happy and have a good time. I think the reason alot of bar owners do the agency thing is because its easy to keep a steady flow of bands that will do their job.
I feel a mistake alot of bar owner make is .......... they don't LOOK for the best entertainment for their bar. They pick out of who comes to their door. How many bar owners "shop" for entertainment ?

I'll leave their name out of this because it is a pretty good bar...
But on one occasion a while back, we went out to a bar with two of our friends and the hubby and the chic were designated drivers that night. (we drove in seperate vehicles and he was going to let me have "fun" that night). well, the one friend couldn't drink because she was preggers...and obviouslly preggers... well, needless to say the boys turned into definite non desig drivers. the friend had been allowed admittance without paying cover and was to get free soda since she was DD. Well, the one bartender swore up and down that the chick was drinking and she was going to no longer getting free sodas because she abused her DD priveldges..and she was going to report her for child abuse and blah blah blah... I called her daft, those drinks were mine, the manager ended up coming over and that person is no longer at the bar. (they were put on trial period after that and they must have fk'd up after that because they got canned).
So, I just thought that was funny. Abusing her DD priveldges. I think maybe we should have stopped to rape a goat before we left that area I mean really... pregnant...drinking!!!! and being in a smoke filled invironment... *tsks* ...the goat would fit right in.
