Music trivia 63

Post by f.sciarrillo »

O.k, we all know that Elton John was the top selling artist of the 70's. But, can you name the top selling artist of all time? The winner will get a can of beans with pork ... :)

The Eagles are the best selling artist of all time I believe.

Anyone? I know Jim probably knows it as well. :)

[edit] When I say artist, I mean singe person, not band - as a bonus though, try and name the number one selling band of all time. And it is not the eagles, they sold a lot of albums, but not the most. I will give you a hint though - The eagles sold 100 millions units. :) [/edit]

The Beatles are the top selling group of all time, that is correct. What I am after is the top selling artist, meaning solo artist. You got half of it correct :)

Oops, sorry. Didn't realize you were looking for "artist", singular. Thanks for the pork and beans!

Good guess Phil!

Garth Brooks is the biggest selling solo artist in the U.S. but Elvis Presley is the biggest selling solo artist worldwide and Michael Jackson is 2nd worldwide.

The Beatles are the biggest selling group both in the U.S. and worldwide.

Would you believe that Eminem was the biggest selling music act of the 00s with over 31 million sold? The Beatles were 2nd for the 00s.

Here are the Top 20 selling music acts in the U.S.

1. The Beatles
2. Garth Brooks
3. Elvis Presley
4. Led Zeppelin
5. Eagles
6. Billy Joel
7. Pink Floyd
8. Barbra Streisand
9. AC/DC
10. Elton John
11. Michael Jackson
12. George Strait
13. Aerosmith
14. The Rolling Stones
15. Madonna
16. Bruce Springsteen
17. Mariah Carey
18. Metallica
19. Van Halen
20. Whitney Houston

The worldwide list is subject to scrutiny because many countries do not compile accurate sales data but here are the top selling music acts in worldwide sales.

1. The Beatles
2. Elvis Presley
3. Michael Jackson
4. ABBA
5. Queen

The remainder have all had over 200 million estimated worldwide sales

AC/DC
Bee Gees
Celine Dion
Cliff Richard (solo and with The Shadows)
Elton John
Julio Iglesias
Led Zeppelin
Madonna
Nana Mouskouri
Pink Floyd
The Rolling Stones

Isn't it amazing when you look at who sold the most records in the U.S. who is on the list? There are some artists like Barbra Streisand, George Strait, and Kenny G. to name a few that have sold a lot of records. On the other hand, some acts that you would think would be higher are not.

Great music information.

I thought the same thing. I knew Cliff Richards (born Harry Rodger Webb; 14 October 1940) is a big music star in Europe and around the world but not much in the U.S. Check this out.

With his backing group The Shadows, Richard dominated the British popular music scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s (i.e. the 5 year "Before-Beatles" period: 1958-1962), before and during The Beatles' first year in the charts in 1963. John Lennon once claimed that "before Cliff and the Shadows, there had been nothing worth listening to in British music.".

During six decades, Cliff Richard has charted many singles, and holds the record (with Elvis Presley) as the only act to make the UK singles charts in all of its first six decades (1950s–2000s). He is the only singer to have had a number one single in the UK in, officially, five consecutive decades, doing so from the 1950s through to the 1990s (though if you discount digital downloads and only count CDs, he has had a number one single in the UK in six consecutive decades, from the 1950s through to the 2000s. (a record generally considered impossible to be beaten). In the British charts, Richard has had more than 130 singles, albums, and EPs make the UK top 20, more than any other artist. He has had 8 US Top 40 single entries, of which 3 peaked in the Top 10. He has won 3 Brit awards, 2 Ivor Novello awards and is the biggest selling singles artist of all time in the UK (over 21 million). He has sold more than 260 million records worldwide.

Studio albums 32
Live albums 7
Compilation albums 15
Extended plays 46
Singles 154
Soundtracks 6
Stage show albums 3
Gospel albums 7
