That new band smell

As much as I hate when a band I'm in calls it quits, I loooooovvvveeeee starting a new project.

I love the unknowns, I love the possibilities, I love creating, meeting new people, re-uniting with some old friends/band members, all of it.

My new project is gonna be jamming for the first time on Sunday and I can barely contain myself. The other dudes are just as stoked as me, cuz they keep sending me riffs and songs they wrote while waiting for me to be ready health-wise. So i get teased by listening to this stuff on my blackberry all day anticipating the weekend.

So do the majority of you like starting a new project, or do you see it as a pain in the ass?
I know that I'm fortunate that I've always been able to find band members rather quickly. My problem is just picking one drummer or one bassist, but I'd imagine it would be frustrating if you couldn't find anyone.

I even think coming up with a new band name is fun!

last band i was w/ was 10 years.now i gotta start all over again.yeah i feel happy at times but then others is like.oh man we gotta long way to go.but i do love playing w/ new musicians....i would have to agree w/ you though sometimes i feel like a kid in a candystore...i want it all and i want it now....gl btw...other month i officially tagged u as the JETS QB

A little of both. It can be a drag at times, trying to get enough material down to play. But doesn't necessarily mean it will be. Like building a new model. (Yes, I still build models.) Ya can't wait to get it finished, but you want to take your time and get it right. Starting a new band can be like X-mas for a kid. The anticipation of what you're going to unwrap. Saying "Wow, this is better than what I hoped for." There's usually more fun than not. I think your new project will fall into that category. Doesn't look like there's any posers or pretty boys.

Awesome thread. I 'm with you on this one, I hate it when bands call it quits because you feel like all you worked for is flushed down the toilet... But at the same time starting a band is always real exciting to me. Getting to be around new people, new music. Its real refreshing.

The only negative thoughts I have are, "Am I gonna cut it? Are WE gonna cut it?". Otherwise, I LOVE getting together and jamming with people. Unfortunately, that's slowed up as I've had to bust my ass for a corporation. But still... Even when I KNOW I'm gonna be shown just how poor a musician I am, it's still fun

oh man i love starting anew project with new/old band mates. my current one has aband mate from my last band and a previous band mate from way back... All new material, and able to still feel each others tendenciesmakes covering new material easy. plus with this project i went from being lead guitar to now being a bassist and I'm loving playing bass, as in i get to use whatever i feel fits as in bass runs to keep it new and to make it ours.. I was a bass players years ago and forgot how fun it can be holding the bands sound together keeping out of treble !!!

When Ronnie Matthews and Jamie Lane came on board to form Vapor Lock, Chris, Justin and I were like .... blown away, especially when it came to ronnie's guitar playing. Here was someone I had never heard play before playing the right solos the right riffs and chords in the songs we were doing.
Yes, it is the unknowns that make me excited and I also wonder if I am going to make the grade. However, I have learned something with all of this.
Be yourself. Sing the way you sing and dont try to sound like what band you are covering. If you do that then become a tribute band. Other than that ... have fun with what you do and rock on

This is my first posting, so `im a little nervous. Kinda like I`ll feel jamin this Sunday with Hawk n some really good players... In The House Band, I never play the same song like i played it befor,different every time..Playing with Mark, is a real experience...he will start out a song, that I may never heard of,...I don`t know the beat , chords, lead, vocals...but by the end of the song, we can add it to our list....thats what jammins all about to me..You improve wen you strike out alone with some wild guitar lead your makin up as you go...He forced me to learn or fail in front of a lot of people...now i can play all over my fret board with my eyes closed...but you just won`t get good without practice...good luck...tomr

nope...

this past summer, we played an all ager over in johnstown. brian hitched a ride with me. about 10 minutes into the drive, he informed me he forgot to put on deodorant. i offered to stop somewhere to get a stick...he politley refused. that may have been the sweatiest show we ever played. the ride home was bad. i had to febreeze my truck.

i will say i stunk pretty bad too so i can't blame him completley.

yeah he does have a tendency to be pretty ripe! He needed to borrow a t-shirt for a show one night so I gave him one of mine, a Slayer one I paid like 35 bux at a show for, but I've never asked for it back cause the musky Bung scent is probably ground in to it permanantly!

So i too am in the early stages of a new project. it was hell finding a drummer and a practice place but we fought thru that, then Frank had to take time off for some family reasons and he's unsure of what he will be doing in the future so we are starting from scratch. we have picked up another singer, he's some1 most of you know, been in the scene for about 20 yrs, but we're not giving up names yet. i will say that once we got the pieces we were looking for this has been the best transition i've ever been involved with and am very excited to unleash upon the land.
the new band odor is working out for us. new ideas and perspectives are always great. i also often forget how much fun it is writing new songs. coming soon....keep an eye and an ear out.
