First time Guitarist

I just bought my first Guitar. Im 30 and figure its never too late to start. I bought a nice Epiphone Acoustic and was wondering what would be the best way to get started. I can play it but I have no idea what chords Im playing, even tho they sound good. I got a DVD to learn the basics and was just wondering what other outlets I may have to get started. Thanks Everyone!

Yea, just use that DVD and maybe learn how to read tabs, and learn some of your favorite songs. And remember practice makes perfect

i get into the mood to work on the clap" now and again but usually am quicky discouraged.... love that tune!!!!! steve howe has a great hybrid picking style...def. a master...... master howe!

niel young tunes are great starters on the acoustic, if you like brother neil that is?

i did, but no matter how i put it i still had to say the clap. i think the correct title to the song is just "clap"

dont get too frustrated - the frustration pays off the first time you nail a song.

I hate to keep plugging this program like it's the best thing ever but "Guitar Pro" is a midi based tab program that plays the song as you read the tab. There are soooooo many lessons you can get too from scales to chords. Built in tuner and you can make your own tabs as well. Also you can transcribe the tab into the tuning you're in if it differs. Oh yeah and you can slow down the tempo if you're having trouble with a part. Def worth looking into for any guitarist or bassist. PM me if you have any questions.

Never to late learn ,I myself didn't start till i was 36.I don"t want to be a rockstar ,i don"t want to learn my favorite song "why would i want to screw that up"i guess its more of a place to escape for for me its been 3 years now and things are coming together.

What helped me the most is probably "You tube" anything and everything is on there,from your favorite riff to technique.
and another thing that really helped is having someone to talk to ,to share your experience with.They can help keep you motivated and help answer questions along your journey.

and practice practice practice even the days you just don't have it in you pick it up and spend 15 noodling,then go about your day

Mostly what everyone else said Matt. Pick it up, pluck way, and keep on playing. From my personal experiences, if you find yourself in a funk, figure out what else you could play. Set as much time as you want and can each day, and just learn all that you can. It's an awesome experience once you really get into it

Chord books, tablature books, on-line tablature, videos, etc. You can use these things to get aquainted with the guitar, but you should learn music theory. I am completely self taught, but when I get with "real musicians" and they say they are playing a song, but in a different key than what I learned it, I'm lost. Throws off everything---chord progressions, solo structure, etc. If you are looking to just playing for yourself or impress your buddies, then the first items will suffice, but if you want to get into a band or jam with a band, then learn the theory. hope this helps

You'd be surprised at how many adult guitar students there are at Music Emporium. It's mostly girls and beginner adults. Never too late to start any musical instrument, I got a banjitar a year ago, and have been attempting to make it sound more "banj" and less "itar." It's a losing battle, but I ain't askeert!--->JMS
