The Who at halftime...
I was impressed how The Who stuck to the cut & paste arrangement they did. It would have to be really tough, I think, to play a chopped-up medley of your own stuff, after having played those songs in full for 40 years. I have trouble if we tag a different ending on a song we've been doing for 3 months.
I missed Latifah and Underwood, I heard a snippet of Latifah on the radio, and it sounded okay. I agree that pop and country (or the current combination of the two) is SO overprocessed and pitch-corrected. Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks at the Grammys is a prime example. IT SOUNDED LIKE KARAOKE NIGHT!!! That skinny chick is all cute and wholesome-looking, but I'd much rather she was butt-ugly and sang with some soul... and maybe a little control.--->JMS

I think you guys forget who the Who is, really. Have you ever listened to their live stuff from the late 60s and 70s? Great, precise albums, but those bastards have always been snotty and reckless on stage. They’re old, but they’re also a goddamn rock band. It’s not supposed to be pretty. It was the same thing with the Stones playing the halftime show a few years ago….everyone expects them to be pretty and accurate like all those fucktards on MTV. I’d like to see you guys do that in your 60s.
edited to say: when you talk about the awesome drum kit, don't forget about the awesome cymbals! they had the who bullseye painted on them!

I have never posted my opinion, or controverted any I read, even personal, until now, and I am so moved to ask, why such a negative critique? They are The Who , or what remains after several decades!. Age will physically tug on the vocal cords, ( and Townsends abs ) But, they own their place in rock history. Better production maybe could have lessened their live perfomance weaknesses on that venue, the fact remains, they own it. And command their respect.

Hell yea.. I'd rather see real rock legends playing for real than some sampled pristine shit....riksylvania wrote:I think you guys forget who the Who is, really. Snotty and reckless is a beautiful way to put it.. hell back when they were doing all the crank in the early 60's they were alomst considered Sex Pistols rip off's... they were damn near a punk band.... haha.. or is Punk what all the MODs turned in to? haha....
The Who (from Great Britain) and The Guess Who (from Canada) are two completely different bands.imapple wrote:I have never posted my opinion, or controverted any I read, even personal, until now, and I am so moved to ask, why such a negative critique? On another note. I heard on one of the morning sports talk shows that somebody said they should have Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas do a halftime show. Now, there are two acts in their 20s and 30s who can't sing live on key at all and play to tracks. Just watch their Grammy Award performances to see what I mean. They can't come close to what The Who has done in their career.

The Who at halftime
How about Pat Benatar pulling a Janet Jackson or Lita Ford!!!! That would have worked for me.
Everyone who complained about the sound is correct. It was not mixed well at all.
I noticed that Pete did a lot of lead vocals on stuff, I wonder if Roger's voice is going??
Anyway, I think the halftime show is overrated and when you bring in acts like Gagme and the Black Eye Peas it is to appeal to the younger audiences.
I am not sure if there will ever be a "good" halftime show that pleases everyone, but hey that is not why I watched the Super Bowl ... I watched to see the best freakin football game of the year.

The Who's music has stood the test of time.
Nice selection of the vast repetoire.
The backup band was great!
Keyboards were spot on.
Light show was very cool.
I thought they had a backing track for Daltrey, we noticed a sync problem at the end of a line! And they did cut away on the scream (Yeah!!), so I'm sure that part was at the least sampled. But I don't blame them really, they're in their 60's, and it's the Super Bowl, so I'm OK with it.
I'm not sure Townsend will ever be regarded as one of the greatest pure guitar players, but his contribution in context of the time period is huge. The songwriting, arrangements, effects, and stage pressence put him in a select group.
After several years now worth of aging rockers, how about something different, like a nice Joe Cocker-style Mad Dogs and Englishmen big All-Star band putting a new spin on some classics?

I would like it noted for the record that nowhere in this topic did I say "It couldnt have been worse", because it could have.
Coulda been Justin Timberlake, or something equally soul sucking.
(Lined up a pretty good one there)

Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.
I noticed that, too. I think they may have cut to a track for that line or stanza, then back to the live vocal channel feed, and I'm not sure why... other than maybe the fact that this year's Superbowl is the new highest-rated TV show in history. I'm sure the snowstorm had a lot to do with that... fewer people were watching in large groups, people watched from home. Same thing happened in the Daytona 500 once, a blizzard put people at home with nothing else to do. It resulted in a ratings bonanza that increased NASCAR's appeal tenfold.--->JMSPStl wrote: I thought they had a backing track for Daltrey, we noticed a sync problem at the end of a line!

The cymbals are part of the drum set & I think everybody noticed them. They were very cool looking with the paint job. I doubt that the paint took away much cymbal wash or sustain the way Zak was playing them.DrumAndDestroy wrote:those were awesomeriksylvania wrote:when you talk about the awesome drum kit, don't forget about the awesome cymbals! they had the who bullseye painted on them!
I've drank enough beer to float a battleship! Go ahead and Rock & Roll all night if you can but don't party every day!
Helly-helly-HELL Yeah!! I remember standing next to you watching them at 30-Something... we were both standing there with our jaws unhinged. Musicianship, showmanship, execution, strong writing... they had it all. Cross your fingers for another local show so people can see what we're talking about.--->JMSRobTheDrummer wrote:I'd rather see Coinmonster play the Super Bowl.....hehe

Im old enough to remember that bullshit!!!! God it made me puke!!!Jim Price wrote:I heard one of the radio sports talk guys suggest that they stage the annual hot dog eating contest during the Super Bowl halftime.
The Who may not have been perfect, but at least it's rock and roll and not Up With People like in the early days of the Super Bowl.
