I just went outside (it's 3AM), and all I have to say is,... WHOA!!! I haven't seen this much snow since '96! They were forecasting 6"-9" some time yesterday. That was more like 6"-12" last night, by the end of it. I was wearing a pair of wading boots outside, and it was over the top of those! Damn!

If I find time, I might have to visit my nephew tomorrow, and take him out in it. (And throw him out into it too!) He's 3½, so he'll probably still mostly sink right into it. Course I'll take pictures too. Then again, depending on what I have to do, dunno if I'll be able to... Plus with all this snow, who knows if I can even get over there

I work with this guy Damien. He and I occasionally sit down and talk weather. We've been discussing, on a serious basis, the likelihood of a good storm this year. He's been predicting, since we started really discussing it (around Nov., Dec.), that some time in February, we'd get a really good blizzard. Well Damien, I think you were right

I'm thinking this is the biggest snow I've seen since 2003, when I had to drive back to Altoona from Harrisburg during a snowstorm after the Millennium Music Conference.

They had forecasted that snowstorm all week, and it was supposed to hit during midday Sunday after the conference had ended. But when I woke up in my hotel room on Sunday morning, it was already falling and there was an inch of snow on the streets. So I hightailed it out of the hotel and immediately made my trek back to Altoona. But the snow got heavier as I went, and was about 3-4" deep by the time I hit Lewistown, and 7-8" when I got back to Altoona. It took me nearly 4 hours to make the trip! Because they had forecasted it all week, I carried along a sleeping bag and just headed straight out to the Q94 house when I got back into town, and camped overnight there after doing "Backyard Rocker" duties. When I woke up Monday morning, there was 18" of snow outside, and Altoona was at a standstill. I was glad I planned ahead!

By the way, where I had left, Harrisburg, got over 2 feet of snow from that system, and people who didn't leave town that Sunday morning were stranded in Harrisburg (and in the host hotel, Crowne Plaza) after the conference for 2-3 days! I think that was one of the reasons why Millennium was moved to the summer months for a couple of years.

I remember that storm vividly. I was called by my pregnant girlfriend at the time, she was headed to the hospital to deliver my son. I drove to altoona with a plow truck ahead of me almost the entire way in a dodge spirit. There was well over a foot of snow and that evening they called out the national guard. It was Feb 16 of 03, because my son was born Feb 17th of 03. This storm definitely falls in that category.

My kids asked me this morning if this was the most snow I had ever seen. I remember growing up as a kid in the 70's, this was a normal snowfall. I have pictures of my house back then, where the snow is halfway up the front door. This is the first time ever that I am aware of that we did not open where I work. We have left early due to weather, but never a complete shut down. Oh well, it will give me some extra shred time, unless the wife comes up with a honey-do list.

Silly me, I was attempting to keep up with clearing the Snow, going out every hour or 2 and sweeping.
HA! From 8:30 or so to 11:45, at LEAST 6 inches were dumped and I lmao at myself and Mother Nature.



I saw a new kind of snow plow (With no blade attached to the front!) around midnight. After I helped the lady next door shovel out her parking space and she parked, I saw the driver of a Dodge Caravan pass by pushing a growing wall of snow in front of it, making a level swath down the road.




Snow this deep in 1 day kind of reminds me of a storm the Winter of '77/'78.

I got 22 inches of snow in my yard in Johnstown already and it is still snowing. Other parts of the area got almost 3 feet in Richland. Our drummer is a postman and had to deliver mail today. I am sure that would not be a goog day at work. Our gig in Williamsburg was cancelled for tonight since we can't get there from here. The blizzard of March 20, 1993 was much worse than this is but this is not good at all either.

I just got the top of my driveway looking pretty good around 9:30 and some PRICK in a grader comes by and plows snow about 8 feet down the drive. I immediately wished death on him. I know it's their job but if he does his road, I'll bet my right nut when he gets to his driveway he either lifts the blade or goes really slow.

Yeah, this one isn't nearly as bad as the blizzard of March 1993. I had to drive home from work just as it was starting to ramp up, and there was 8" on the roads by the time I got to my house. I couldn't get up my hill at that point, and had to ditch the car in a neighbor's driveway below my house.

A few hours after I walked up the hill to my house, I realized I forgot something I needed in my car, and went back down to retrieve it. By that point there was already a foot and a half on the ground and brisk winds, and it was all I could do to walk back up the hill to my house; I was exhausted!

Of course, that storm dumped 3 feet of snow not just on Altoona, but much of the eastern half of the country (including Alabama, J Michaels!).

My family and I were living on Sunbury St. in Minersville in 1993 and I will never forget that weekend.



This will be my son's first memory of such copious Snow from 1 storm...now, if only he would return home from where ever he went to this a.m. and help me shovel out!



I can see the Cathedral, Flag, Hospital, Martin's Plaza and beautiful Mountains again, so it might be over.



Mail will most likely NOT be delivered today in this section of Altoona. I once received a note from my mail carrier stating that due to my steps not being clear by the time he came around, my mail was not delivered.

At 10:30 last night, I cleared a place for my dogs to do their business. When I took them out less than 5 minutes later, there was an additional 1/2 inch of snow on the edge of the deck I had just cleared bare. Standing in it for about a minute left me snow-covered from head to toe. I never saw it snow that hard in that amount of time. If it had kept that pace, we'd all be under 6 ft of snow right now!
Also, this snow was very patchy. It seemed that snow depths varied several inches even in my neighborhood alone.--->JMS

Blessings on the neighbors at the end of the street! Using their snow blower, they cleared the area in front of my house and where I park! I was awaiting a plow to go by and sho nuf, the blade was angled to my side of the street. Drinking a can of Volt before I go do the area next to my vehicle. I am on the home stretch and LOOOOOVING the Sun and Blue Sky. I might still have enough oomph later to bake what else, but Snowball Cookies!

The National Weather Service states that December 2009 was the most snowfall in the contiguous U.S. ever since they started keeping records. Also, the Johnstown, PA area got over 46 inches of snow up through the first week in January and add this too it now.

I measured 24 and one half inches. I have a steep driveway, and there was at least 3 feet in the steep sided bottom part. My neighbor's snow blower could not make any headway there. I had to shovel a starter path for the snow blower. I live only about a half mile from Cresson hill and always seem to get more snow here than even Duncansville, only 2 miles away.
