I would have to say YES during the Bill Bruford days and during the Union Tour.
John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra back in the 70's, these guys blew me away. I saw them live at St. Francis, front row ten feet from the stage.
King Crimson also during the Bill Bruford days.
UK - Short lived but killer with John Wetton, Alan Holdsworth, Bill Bruford, and Eddie Jobson. Terry Bozzio eventually replaced Bruford. I got to see these guys at the old Homestead Theater, another unbelieveable show. Shortly after the show they condemned the theater as being unsafe to be occupied and have since torn it down.
Is there a reoccuring Bruford theme here? I actually got to see him at the Decade in Oakland years ago. You talk about up close and personnel this place was about 1/3rd the size of the main room at 30 something.
Last but definately not least
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - any iteration

At least I got to see Yes with Bruford and with Alan White. I also saw ELP in 1974 I think.
