I don't get it

Post by witchhunt »

Once again the good ol' U.S. of A. is going to the rescue of a foreign country. We'll contribute millions (probably billions of dollars) to Haiti. When is this country going to start to take of it's own problems. We have a major unemployment problem, millions of homeless, and people literally starving and freezing to death. Hurricane Katrina happened how many years ago and New Orleans still isn't back to normal. Don't get me wrong, I'm not completely heartless, I feel terrible for these people but this shit pisses me off. Please government of America, take care of us first.

I agree 100%. This country should come first. Helping others is great, but as you said, we have homeless and starving right here among us. WTF America?

Our goal is to rule the world obviously. We love getting our hands into other countries. Shit, we will even MAKE reasons to get into other countries. It sucks. Oh well, Im no politician, i have no say.

I have a slightly different take, How bout we cut off all the manufacturing in China, bring back manufacturing in the U.S., keep our money here and when a disaster like this happens we'll have a few extra buck to aid another country. :)
Don't bitch to me about the economy while you're still buying Chinese products.

I'm all for helping others, but it would be nice if we could take care of things here. Its like donating money to charity, yet you can't even make your mortgage or buy groceries.

i don't believe mankind will end in 2012...........but, if it does..we deserve it.

"We saw the world come to our aid back on 9/11," he said, and now New York wants to "make sure that the world comes to the aid of the Haitian people."

i don't like to get into these kinds of talks, but, these PEOPLE need help. i have a mortgage and bills, and like everyone else, times are tight(and by tight i mean flat out depressing). the fact is Haiti HAD NOTHING....and now they have less.

it has nothing to do with governments or political parties. it's about real human beings.

I always thought "Human Decency" meant taking care of your own, like Vietnam War veterans that are living on the street. I'm not saying we shouldn't help the people of Haiti, we should, but our "priorities" should start here in this country.

taking care of our veterans who have been neglected by the government is a great example of human decency. no argument there. i'm an active Sons of the American Legion member and i completey agree with the fact that our vets need to be supported in any way possible. and yes, our prioties do start in this country. that's why i'm proud of it. we should be setting an example when we can, and kicking ass when we should. just my opinion.

but, i don't beleive that the idea of "human decency" is limited to only "taking care of your own". that kind of thinking can be dangerous and self destructive. once again...just my opinion.

I agree that human decency isn't just taking care of our own, but I believe that's where it should start. I'm not saying ignore what happened in Haiti, because if any country needs help, it's that one. They need help, and they need it now. We should be sending aid as I'm typing this, but there are plenty of people in this country that need help, too. And I'm not talking about the people that have made Welfare and government assistance a career.

I happen to agree with all sentiments. It really sucks that we are in such a slump. As the kind of guy I am, I do feel we should help Haiti... But I don't feel we should dump a few million dollars on their laps. Start charity with personal charity. This country can't afford federal charity right now, and nor can most of us on the lower level. However, if the upper level populace wishes to donate and has the capability, then by all means, let them

In the mean time, I feel that we should otherwise donate what and if we can. Have Wal-Mart send a few billion bottles of their Sam's Club water. If some major company made a few hundred too many cans of whatever (food), ship some out. It might not seem like much, and it may be selective, but believe me... A few people down there won't care. They'll certainly be happy to have food. If a few dr.s wish to donate their time and/or capabilities, by all means (as long as, of course, it doesn't drain from necessity elsewhere)

We should do what we can, not what we can't

Two of the biggest problems the US has is 10% unemployment and millions of people without proper access to a doctor.

All of the companies that took their work to foreign countries like Mexico, Thailand and China ARE NOT coming back. Not unless you are willing to work for about $ .50 a day.

Stimulus money is being spent and many people currently do have a job because of that. Obama cannot create manufacturing jobs out of thin air. They are gone.

If you want the federal government to help keep jobs (stimulus) and not raise taxes you get a deficit.

As far as I know (lonewolf will correct me if I'm wrong) the US has always run a deficit. That's how our government has always been.

Rush Limbaugh used to explain, during the first Bush administration, how the deficit was meaningless. He would rant on and on how it meant nothing because that's how our government is run, and always has. I would love to hear THOSE old tapes.

How would you create jobs in the US ?

I do agree we should take care of our own, so does Obama. That's why he's working on health care reform.

As far a charity helping the Haitians. It wouldn't be enough nor would it be mobilised quick enough. I'm sure my church will take up a collection on Sunday as will many others.

I agree they need the help. But you have to do it properly. The Haitian government is a corrupt one, so we have to make sure that all money is actually going to the people.

Also, I watched clips of Obama's speech today. I kept waiting for him to blame the previous administration. After all everything, including this, is their fault, right?

You make a very good point in the first half of your post, but c'mon man, the second half is utterly assinine.

there are

There are some that would say that the only thing that really matters in this life is helping each other and those less fortunate. The true wealth of a person is that they are loved. You know that feeling you get when someone passes and you miss them so much it hurts. That is love. That is worth something. That does not happen because the US went without a fucking deficit.

These people need help. Many will be sarcastic and many more will not care. That is the nature of humanity. Thats why capitalism is sucking here in the good old USA.The truth is that they need help and we will help them.

Bringing jobs back here is going to be tough. There are some that say that we have evolved through the "industrial Age" and through the "information Age" and now we are in the "talent Age". This would mandate that we all have access to the same info and the same tools, it is how you treat people and what you do with the tools that matters. Those who really have the "Talent" will rise to the top. Not going to bring back manufacturing jobs to the US though. That is done.

I am very curious to see how this turns out and hope for the best for the people of Haiti. You also have to remember that this country was not so well off even at their best...

Its capitalism that is funding the hundreds of millions (it will eventually go into the billions) that we are spending to help them.

The only good the porkulus money did was help a few blue state governments with their budget shortfalls. That may have temporarily prevented some government worker layoffs. As far as the private sector, this boondoggle is a disaster. Very, very few jobs created when compared to the $800,000,000,000 spent.

To put it into perspective. The amount spent on the porkulus act is enough to provide 20 MILLION people with $40,000. Unfortunately, the porkulus act is more akin to spending $20 MILLION PER JOB to get 40,000 jobs for a year. Many of the jobs that have been created are unsustainable without continued government subsidy. You know...corporate welfare.

As far as what you said about the deficit, Bill:

The US government has has always maintained a debt, but not always had a yearly deficit. Ever since the Roosevelt agenda was made "Constitutional" when he extorted the Supreme Court, we have had a lot more yearly deficits than surpluses. This was not always the case.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
