Ive been using IEMs or plugs the last 2 years. Ill never go back. My hearing is shot and I want to help protect what I have left. If that makes me a pussy gosteelers, Im fine with that
I feel what you are saying Kev about not being comfortable. It took me about 1 show to get use to them. I know how important it is as a drummer, like you, to be comfortable. As Jeff said, cracking the seal in one of your ears can really help. Another benefit is when I practice I hear every little thing and it makes my playing more precise.
Might be worth another try.

Ear Plugs
Dr. Brandt (I think was her name) in Johnstown made me a custom pair back in the late '90s. They were $100 then and have been the absolute best investment. I'm not playing much at the time and didn't really need them during my acoustic gig, but my time in bands made them worthwhile. They're like a hearing aid, but reverse. They basically bring everything down with very little coloration.
I also use them a lot for shooting.
