I'm asking because I've been recently trying to catch some spins on any small time local stations. I tried the bigger ones in the area, but they said they only play 'hits', I guess meaning billboard charting singles.
I live 3 blocks from a college (Juniata College), so tomorrow I'm going to head up there with some stuff, because I believe they have some kind of station. See what I can do.
Anyone have any expierience getting spins? And if so, any advice?
I redid a Todd Rundgrun song in 1978 on a 45 and took it to maybe 40 stations between Pittsburgh and Philly asking for airplay. Maybe 8 stations played it but by then most stations wouldn't play any song that wasn't already a hit. They said that they just couldn't risk 3 minutes of airtime on an unproven product.
Up until the late "60's" stations often played local stuff and that's how lots of great songs became hits. The movie "That Thing You Do" was typical of that.
I did get fair college airplay but that was over 30 years ago. Have no idea what' it's like now. Good Luck.
college radio would be the way to go if your trying to get some attention with radio listeners. Juniata i believed played a song from our old band before we we're supposed to play there. You might have to look up ways to send it out to different colleges, i know Penn Tech has college radio.
The script was written, and the villian was cast. The provocation needed, they will provide. They did it before, they'll do it again.
You're not going to get spins unless you are tossing your stuff to a local show or a college radio station, period. End of story. Radio playlists are so tight now in any format that you will not have a local musician ever crack the playlist, no matter how good the stuff is, until you get signed by a major label and release an album, re: Halestorm.
Your best bet is college radio and local shows, like the Homegrown Rocker on WRKY. Jim Price can get your stuff heard, by local fans, so contact him here or just read one of the posted recaps to get the addy to send your cd to.

I rap though, so he probably couldn't help me, correct? Or am I mistaken?
And thanks guys for the advice, I'll definitly drop my stuff off and send it to a few colleges.

check the websites, it might not jump out at you, but the music they play are mailed in cds, and usually at the end of the spring semester they give the cds out for free. (that's what penn tech did at least)

If I was a rapper, I'd attempt to get my stuff played at dance clubs, if it's even remotely danceable. Radio, as mentioned, is programmed by a-holes, and is too tightly controlled by people who don't actually LISTEN to their stations. See Jim Price, if he can't play your stuff, he'd likely have a connection or two to help.--->JMS
i used to own nbc, but i sold my shares to msn. i know it's not radio, just saying is all
in reality: jim price. give him your disc and he might play it on the homegrown rocker... not that i wanna say anything on his behalf, but that guy breaths the local music scene.
Stept On got regular rotation on Quik Rock and even 105.9 The Buzz back in the day, we weren't signed but both stations helped in promoting alot of our shows and in turn we would play for diff. events those stations would have. "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" kinda thing. The more they played it, the more people heard and the more people started calling in to request more, we even did an interview at 6am for the quik rock morning show once.
It's all who you know. I would start by asking stations if they are promoting any certain events that maybe your band could play for, try to get in good with some of their personel, then maybe float a cd their way. It's not an impossible task but it is difficult, so be patient.
