nirvana or green day

Post by grungeracer7 »

I'm totally obsessed with both of these legendary bands. Both have created a music scene that will never die. I am more for the grunge scene but a lil punkish. So what do y'all think. Nirvana? or GreenDay?
When the world comes to an end which one would you be listening to?

Hands down, Green Day remains one of my favorite Rock bands of the 90's. The hooks, the energy, the production - it's all there. Dookie still gets major play in my stereo, as does Insomnia and 39/Smooth. There's a type of cynical intelligence to their music if you listen closely.

Besides, there have been many songs about masturbation, but none of them top Longview.

I second the motion on this. Greenday is an awsome band.

I'll be the oddball and choose nirvana. There's a soft spot in my heart for Kurt Cobain, I really dig his songs. I like green day also, they're just a little more poppy than I care for. Definately two great bands.

Definatly Green Day, Just good, simple catchy tunes that are just plain fun as hell. Besides Green Day and stuff like the clash / Ramones is the only thing I can sing ( vocal range of a bass guitar, maybe less )

The new Green Day album kicks ass. Especially "American Idiot" and "Jesus of Suburbia"

Check it out!

Neither

Post by Imgrimm01 »

I will have to go with Ummm Neither , Although Nirvana ended an era ( Hair metal ) Kobain's lyrics were hugely OVER rated and alot of the music was off key and loose. Green Day ? Great stuff if you only like 3 chord cheese ! I mean lets put either of these bands against a REAL band i.e. Rush, Tool, The police, or pick your favorite band who happens to know how to write and arrange a song and what have you got? Well I will tell you 7 guys who aren't worthy to carry jocks ! Just my opinion and remember .. You ask !

Wow, I will have to agree with Bobby Lee on this one - although it has nothing to do with the 3 chords or anything. I just don't like the music.

Let's put it this way, if I am listening to either one of these bands when the world ends, then that is enough proof for me that there is a Hell.

Thanks...I was gonna post something similar but you stole the words right out of my mouth....

and Grunge is DEAD, and has been since the inception of nu-metal, which is almost dead itself as 90% of the metalheads have realized that nu-metal isn't at all related to slayer or death metal...

Lets also not forget that the same people Kobain put out of business in the early 90's are making a comeback as well. The hair bands are making a resurgance on the scene, whether it's with their original bands or with a new band. Look how much success Velvet Revolver is having. Great songs, but also has 3 ex-members of Guns N' Roses, which bridges the gap between the young people that buy the disc because of the songs and the older people because of who's in the band. I bought the disc because of Slash and Duff McKagan. No surprise there. Also, you have reunions from bands like Europe, Motley Crue, and even more obscure hair bands like Kingdom Come and Black N' Blue either underway or in the works as we speak.

You also have new bands using the pop metal formula from the 80's as well. The Darkness, Jet, and The Wildhearts come to mind.

To answer the question, though, if I had to pick, I would go with Green Day simply because Def Leppard is not on the list.

Rush???!!! You've got to be kidding me! You're talking about a band that hasn't even attempted to do anything "different" since the early 80's.... oh except Feedback... yeah there we go... try to take someone elses material and put your own shrilly (<-- is that a word?) annoying vibe to it..... Seriously, I can't think of an album released that isn't mostly comprised of material previously released. And as far as arrangements go, it may be just me, but I almost feel like you can play with the tempo of any one of their tunes and lay any of their exhaustingly over rated lyrics on top of it.....

To the original Question.... While both bands hit mainstream within a few years of each other, Green Day's punkish rythms demand social interaction.... you've gotta get out on the floor with someone and jump around... Cobain definitely put the grunge era on the map.... he was awesome!

You know, a lot of people think that, but I beg to differ. People like Jerry Cantrell and Stone Gossard were/are smoking players.

But I always thought the arguments about what form of Rock is technically superior were pointless. The truth is whether we're talking about grunge, arena rock, hair metal, ect. Rock is a simple form of music; it's based on simple melodies, simply harmonies, and simple meter.

With the exception of some of the more progressive sounding bands, Rock is probaly one of the most elementary forms of Western music.

Watch it mister!! You are talking about my favorite band!!! But, I would have to agree with you to an extent. I haven't really cared for anything they have done since Grace Under Pressure and even that was only marginal. I would have to say that their last decent album was Signals.

And, as far as Cobain is concerned; I doubt he would be anything special if he were alive. I put him in a category with so many others that died young - undeserving martyrs. But that might be a topic for another thread.

That's actually a tough one. I know more Green Day than I know Nirvona. I like a lot of what Kurt did. I love what Green day is. I'm not too thrilled with their new album though. I think if Kurt wouldn't have been murdered, then they'd have gone on to make a few more cds and he'd have lost his magic in my eyes then. Unless he knew when to call it quits and make like two more albums and retired Nirvona's nound.

I think, in all honesty, I'd have Green Day on. Cuz if the world is falling apart, then you're in serious Dookie...

For those of you who dislike both of these bands:
Green day represents the lil bastard in all of us. Who really cares if they just play 3 chords (which isn't true). Listen to the words. Even if you listen to "Time of your Life" (not Overrated like alot of you like to say).

Nirvana okay again with the words. Kurt could take something as stupid as going to his "grandma's" and turn it into a catchy song. "Smell's LIke Teen Spirit" enough said. Grunge may be dead for now. I'm working on a band to uprise grunge. Call me crazy but when it comes to music worth listening to I never give up. Yes I am a young dreamer and proud of it. And it was souly these two bands that encouraged me. ( okay there were a few others) (okay it was every good band in rock history) But anywayz thanks for yer opinions which I do respect in all honesty. Everyone must stand for something or we'll fall for anything. Thanks again.

They might have been smoking something, but as far as I'm concerned, they are just rhythm guitarists. That's what separates grunge from the rest of rock: no virtuoso guitar work. None, nada. If there was any, I'd like to hear it.

Exactly...Jerry Cantrell doesn't smoke...he is a good guitarist, excellent song writer but, a smoking musician, not even close....
