strat question..

Post by felix'apprentice »

ok, so this may be a dumb question. but im just wondering, i see some strats have the back cover off and you can see the springs and all that and some have them on. does it make a difference sound wise? mines on, and i dont plan on taking it off. cause it looks good and im a girl and all about things looking good lol.

so does the back cover make a difference or not? or am i just dumb?

lol thanks all

Not really. Some wanker geeks will keep their covers off so they can fiddle with the wanker tension and other adjustments--even between songs. I suppose it would also give you quick access to block & unblock your trem. My little Steinberger boat paddle has a litlle locking arm that changes it from a trem to a hardtail with a little flick.

I always end up taking off the back cover and putting something on the springs. Every time I play a guitar with a tremolo I can hear the springs any time I do a sudden stop in a song. With the cover on, it sounded louder to me. It was almost like the springs were acting like a reverb chamber.

Any difference is minimal. Use to read a lot about it makes the "tone"
better but don't see much difference. Did actually ask Mark Chapman
about it once. He said he didn't think there'd be any way it'd make a
difference.

To me, if ANYTHING, it would seem like Orangekick's theory would
make more sense and there'd be more resonance.

Mine are off just from doing work on them and never putting back on.
...Guess I should find them....

The real reason for taking the back cover off on a Stratocaster is when changing strings frequently you do not have to mess around as much. Yes I know what everyone is thinking "there are holes in the plate to allow the strings to pass through without removing the cover". Just go ahead and try that and get back to me on how easy it was. Then take the cover off and try again and you will see.

As I sit and ponder the "to cover or not to cover" issue, it occured to me that when you break a string during a show, no cover means the difference between a record-setting string change between sets or being stuck with your back-up axe for the night

Hmmm...it depends on the back-up axe.

Back-up axe: Paul Reed Smith Custom 22 = cover

Back-up axe: First Act Wal-mart Special = no cover

AH...so this why Tiny Tim's been looking for you. Thought it was for a
totally different reason.

SIDENOTE: Ya, I know. Tiny Tim's dead....just ignoring that for the sake
of the comment... DANG! could throw a lot in a long with that! But for the
sake of some RP courtesy, won't. Exasperated Sigh.

I like to Wank Off from time to time!

Actually I keep my cover off just so that I have easy access to string changes or throw my special hunk of wood in there to block it off.
When I don't feel like wanking that is!
