Cabs, ohms, etc.

Post by RFBuck »

I'm a total doof when it comes to this stuff, so here's the deal:

I have a 2x12 combo with adjustable impedance (16,8,& 4) & 2 8ohm speakers. I run that at 16ohms. I'm good so far.
I just bought a 2x12 cabinet that's 8ohms. According to Terry at Guitars-N-Stuff, I can't run the combo with the cab because I can't adjust the impedance accordingly. I'll take his word for it
NOW....I have a 4x12 cab with 4 4ohm speakers (and 100 watts). If I took 2 out of there and put them in the combo, that would be 2 4ohms, running the impedance to 8...right???
Would I then be able to run the combo and 2x12 cab together then?

2-8ohm speakers in series = 16ohms
2-8ohm speakers in parallel= 4 ohms
2-4ohm speakers in series = 8ohms
2- 4 ohm speakers in parallel = 2ohms

so on and so forth....any combination can obtain the desired ohm load if properly wired in....series , parallel or combination of both. Series doubles impedance. Parallel drops impedance in half...

series configuration
+ speaker 1 = + from amp
- speaker 1 gets wired to + of speaker 2
- speaker 2 = - from amp

parallel configuration
+ both speakers = + from amp
- both speakers = - from amp

Never attempt a ohm load less than the amps rating .

Is that that smokin' Bugera that I mistook for a Bogner?

Anyway, if you want to use your combo's speakers along with the 2x12 extension cabinet, you need to match the 2x12 cabinet up with your combo at 16 ohms. That means you need two 8 ohm speakers in series for the 2x12 extension cab.

Assuming there is an extension speaker jack, you can then set your amp for 8 ohms (16 in parallel with 16) and connect the extension cabinet.

EDIT: Sorry, misread your question.

The answer is YES...two 4 ohm speakers in series will make the combo 8 ohms and match the 2x12 extension. You would set your amp to 4 ohms.

Those speakers are only 25 watts apiece, though. Isn't your amp 60 watts? That's cutting it pretty close...you could blow them if you use the combo by itself. You may want to consider taking the 2 out of the 2x12 extension and putting them in the combo and putting the two 25 watt speakers in the 2x12 extension.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
