Bass hangers...

Post by MOONDOGGY »

I have VERY little floor space in my house, so I want to start hanging my basses.

I want hooks like these:

Image

I was gonna buy these, but they require instruments that have Slightly less than 2" nut widths:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

I contacted the seller and he has a very limited amount of "Y" shaped hooks that can accommodate slightly less than 2 1/4". BUT...I have several basses that are a bit more than 2 1/4" at the nut and my main one is almost 2 1/2".

I haven't checked Surplus City in a while, so I'm not sure about them. I did a quick check of Harbor Freight's site and didn't find anything. So, does anyone know of any hardware stores or online retailers that would have these rubber coated "U" or "Y" hooks/hangers up to 2 1/2" wide inside the prongs?

Thanks

Dan

I have a couple of hooks like the ones you pictured. They hold the bass closer to the wall than I was comfortable with. I bought the "string swing" commercial hangers. I couldn't be happier with them. If I recall they are like $12. Considerably more than the tool hangers, but not a lot of money in the long run.

What's the widest nut width that they'll hold? Also, is there a weight limit to them?

That's funny you said that. I just made about ten of those last week. You have two great options in altoona. One is truevalue in duncansville. They stock 4 at a time that hold 50 lbs. each. They cost about 3 bucks each.

The second is big lots. They sell hangers that hold 25 lbs each and cost 1.50 each (they have TONS of them). Look in the tools section.

Hope this helps :).

I've seen those, and I like how the lock the instrument in. But I need something than can handle a significant amount more than 15.4 lbs. I don't have any basses that weigh quite that much, but if it means one of my babies possibly taking a fall, I don't want any risks!

And I don't know the max width of those Hercules hangers, but it doesn't look wide enough for a 2 1/2" nut.

I don't know what the specs are on those string swings, but the holders are adjustable, if they don't fit you just pull them apart or push them closer together. The weight of a bass has yet to move them. I don't know how much they would hold, but they have never budged, and I just have them mounted with the included drywall anchors (which were very beefy) If you mounted them to a stud with long screws, I'm sure they would hold a ton.

I suggest u dont buy those hooks (I am imaginging u might buy the inexpensive ones). The coating on the hooks can/will mar or eat some of the finishes on the necks where the hook makes contact with the finish. I had this happen to me a few years back. It was an expensive lesson to learn.

Buy good ones.

So go with the foam covered hooks, not the rubber-coated?

So does anyone know where I can get hooks with 2 1/2" inside width, can hold 25 or >, and are foam covered, not rubber? This is turning out to be much worse than I thought! I don't really have many other options, I need floor space! My house has TINY rooms!

HELP!

I don't think "rubber" is the issue, its a specific type of rubber. Have you ever seen an ebay auction for an old gibson or fender with a ring around the neck? Its from the rubber on old stands interacting with the nitro finish.

I would not worry about it as long as you get a newer product that is actually designed for instruments.

That makes sense I guess. I've seen some guitars with those dreaded marks around the neck, but not too many. And most floor stands are made with rubber or surgical type tubing. You'd think there'd be a lot more guitars w/ those marks.

I suggest you get some project wood 1/2" x 1" by a few feet long, some matching 1/2" dowel rods and some wood screws. Cut everything to 3" lengths and screw & glue two dowels to each piece of the project wood. Drill a hole in the center of the project wood and use whatever type of screw you need to mount it to the wall. Not all guitars are symmetrical at the nut and you can angle this to suit your guitar.

The String Swings are adjustable for different headstocks, which is great because if you try to hang a fender in a hook that is perfectly parallel to the floor, the body goes shooting off to the right.

Not that there is anything wrong with building your own, I'm a big DIY fan, but those String Swings are like $12....

I have a hanger similar to a String Swing, but it has a little rotating hanger like I described and the weight of the guitar settles it in. Its supposed to be universal, but I can't seem to hang my Steinberger on it, lol.

I would drive out to Longs outpost in the cove and see what they have. We made some really nice racks for Guitar hero shit and they had a lot of different sizes that are foam wrapped and rubber wrapped. If you get out that way, just an idea...

I just wrapped my hooks with black duct tape when I put them up. That should take care of any finish issues. I hung 6 guitar's and basses with 25 to 50 lb tool hangers for 11 bucks total. I cut pieces of hardwood to mount them. Painted them white and viola.

I'd definitely go with the premade if you can afford them, but mine have great form and function and I saved about 50 bucks and the 2-3 day wait time, so I'm pretty happy.

Another item that might work good where the guitar rests is a 2" long x 1" wide stickyback velcro strip--the loops half.
