Drummers #2. Shoes or Shoeless?

Post by banderson »

Seems like most big time pro's on instructional DVD's i own wear shoes. Wrestling shoes, drumming shoes, Chuck Taylors, even boots...ect ect ect...

I myself dont wear shoes and play in just socks. I think its because I have my drums in my basement and I never had to worry about putting shoes on to go play and therefore that method became my comfort. I've tried shoes and I cant get used to it....Its almost like the shoes themselves take up too much extra space or something? Plus the feel is alot different on the pedal. I know there are some other players around that play without shoes as well.

Thoughts and opinions?

Chucks. I have played in bare feet and socks before tho. I like the grip with the chucks though, it gives me more control.

I played with bare feet this past weekend for the first time in years, I forgot how much more feel you get that way. It's safe to say I will be shoeless from now on.
I'm a drummer...I just hang out with musicians.

Back in the day it was Capezio dance shoes. They were white and ultra light...you could fold them in half and put them in your pocket. Plus, they looked theatrical and went well with the big hair 80's look we had. Now adays, it's chucks or some light slip on loafer that looks cool.

You forgot to mention that the Vans are the only things you're wearing when you play.
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

funny this topic is mentioned as usually I just wear whatever shoes I have on but this past week I experimented playing at practice in just socks and I get more feel out of it and can accent my kick patterns better as well when needed than I can with shoes on.

chucks. they seem to give me the perfect amount of grip, but still allow the perfect amount of slip.
