Denzel may shoot film in Tyrone
Production companies seek permit details for action movie to be released in 2010

POSTED: August 15, 2009

TYRONE - Scenes from an upcoming Denzel Washington runaway train thriller may look familiar to Tyrone residents when the film is released next year.

Borough officials confirmed Friday that representatives from the production companies making "Unstoppable," which will be directed by Tony Scott for a fall 2010 release by 20th Century Fox, were in Tyrone recently seeking information about permits for the project.

"I think with the film business, nothing is definite," said Mayor Jim Kilmartin, although he said he is hopeful the town will host film crews in October for up to five days. "There is no guarantee they'll pull into town."

"Unstoppable" is an action-thriller set around a runaway train laden with chemicals that must be stopped before it hits a curve and wipes out a town, according to the Internet Movie Database Web site.

Filmmakers are interested in Tyrone because the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad line runs through the middle of the town, Kilmartin said. Washington Avenue between 14th and 10th streets, where the tracks split the lanes of Washington Avenue, and north of Tyrone along the tracks beyond the American Eagle Paper Mill, are being considered for the movie shoot.

Code Enforcement Officer Jim Metzgar said permits to film and close the roads are being sought, and the borough is working to coordinate the proper permits to close Washington Avenue between 14th and 10th streets. Because 14th Street is part of state Route 453, state permits also are required, he said.

The filmmakers are seeking input from businesses and residents in the area of the proposed shoot, Kilmartin said.

"If this really happens, it's exciting," Kilmartin said, noting that the filming would definitely provide a boost to the local economy.

Representatives of Los Angeles-based production companies Firm Films and Millbrook Farm Productions referred questions to Pittsburgh-based Mogul Mind Studios.

As of Friday, the project's publicist Gabriela Gutentag had not responded to a request for more details on the film or possible filming in Tyrone.

Denzel Washington to be in Tyrone

This is bigger than when Jack Nicholson filmed the hunting scene in "Hoffa" at Lake Raystown. My uncle and I served as security for that and watched as the plane landed at the lake. Was not able to get close enough to see Jack, Danny and Assante. But still that was freakin cool. I think RPers should go there looking for extra roles. 8)

My buddy Mark Morningstar lives a few hundred yards from the site at the lake. He did security, too, but didn't get to meet anyone. He saw Devito and I want to say Armand Assante, I think.
I'm glad Denzel's coming to Tyrone. Maybe all the middle-aged black women will leave me alone for awhile. --->JMS

Celebs arent all that... Some people get so excited when a celeb comes around them...

Michael Madsen and Linda Blair was both at the Fright night film fest... Michael is a dick and linda is a bitch lol...

A guy got a picture of Linda, and started to walk off, looking at other things, she called security on the guy, and once security caught up to him, they made him pay for the picture... Good old celebrities, anything to make a buck anymore...

Their more annoying than anything... However I can say that William Forsythe is a pretty awesome guy... We got to interview him live on the station, we was allowed to record "voice" but was not allowed to record video, had something to do with their contracts..

But yeah.. Celebs aint nuttin but rich greedy money hungry assholes... and Denzel is the same as the rest... If you dont live in Tyrone, you wont get to see nothing, unless you know someone that lives near where they will be filming... and then, they might boot you out, so you cant "film" or document anything their doing.

Is this movie a somewhat remake of Runaway Train?

Runaway Train (1985)
This runaway train is no wreck! Jon Voight and Eric Roberts escape Alaska's maximum-security prison and hop aboard a locomotive. When a heart attack fells the engineer, the train becomes a runaway, careening across the frozen tundra with Voight, Roberts and engineer's assistant Rebecca De Mornay trapped aboard. If you think this sounds like corny action fare, think again: Roberts and Voight earned Oscar nominations

I worked security for that too. I guarded the cabin that they filmed at. Is your uncle Cliff Isenberg?

I met Nicholson and DeVito. Danny has got to be the shortest non-midget I've ever seen.

yea, they are blocking the whole town off. the locations department for the film is asking people to leave town that day... said they'd call us about negotiating what it will take to get us to leave for the day. pretty sure i'm going to tell them to put A slacker theory song on the soundtrack, and i won't have a problem going anywhere when they come in to film.

i don't care for celebs, either. they're just people. they want what all people want. to be left the fuck alone. i don't care to meet denzel. now if it was jack nicholson...

Denzel Washington will probably never step foot in Tyrone. It'll likely be a second unit film crew and director, getting shots of trains running through town and on down the line to Julian.
