I don't like your band.
Why do people get so bent about this? Seriously???
Can you handle critique?
I've played punk/hardcore and metal all my life, so maybe I have thicker skin. I'm used to the whole (Oh you play that Rah rah screamin CRAP, that's not music that's garbage).
So many people get offended. Of course if you like someones band and compliment them, you get accused of blowing them. no win on this one.
We must all like and hate the same bands.

I have been told by people that my band has sucked, you know what I ask them?
"Where's your band?"
No response ever.
I have thick skin, been in this business for over 2 decades.
You are never going to please everyone no matter how hard you try.
Love it or hate,I will still be there playing for whoever wants to listen.

I think I'm my biggest critic, personally.f.sciarrillo wrote:The biggest critics are those how either A: do not know what they are talking about. Or B: have no band of their own ..
If you don't want someone saying something bad about your music, you have 2 options: Don't ask people what they think or quit now.

You will also find the most people who like to critique what you do are the ones you don't ask.Tegamal wrote:I think I'm my biggest critic, personally.f.sciarrillo wrote:The biggest critics are those how either A: do not know what they are talking about. Or B: have no band of their own ..

Well, Running an internet radio station for now 4 years, I tend to "know" and learn about the bands and how they play... Some are good, some are great, and there are some that do really suck lol..
B.
I don't have a band, I don't want one, cause I cant sing, play guitar, play bass, drums, keyboard, and all that other stuff... but I know good sound when I hear it

There are some people whom you don't ask, that you should, and the ones you do ask, you shouldnt... Most people will be truthful, and you want the truth don't you? So you can atleast know what needs to be worked on... And then theres other people that are just plain assholes, and don't know the difference between metallica and megadeth...

Whenever someone throws up a link to thier music on here, I usually only comment if I think it kicks ass. Sometimes, I don't know if they are looking for honest criticism or just to get a pat on the back...or maybe I just haven't had a chance to give it a listen. The computer at work doesn't load the players on MySpace for some reason.
Bottom-line: If you truly and seriously love your craft and want your craft to be the best that it can be, you have to leave your ego at the door - No ifs, ands, or buts. In order to get better, you have to be critiqued. Most people (myself including) just can't be THAT objective to truly critique themselves. There's a reason why most signed bands work with a producer. If there's something that I'm doing that I could be doing better, I want to know.
You're always going to have people who aren't digging what you're doing for some reason. They don't like the style of music you play or they have some philosophical disposition against you playing a cover tune or they don't like the message of your music or maybe they just think that you're too loud. In cases like that, I've learned something about music that's also generalizable to the rest of life: You have to please yourself first before you can please anybody else. I don't justify what I do or why I do it to anyone and anybody here that puts their ass on stage or in the studio or just likes to sit on their porch picking a flat-top shouldn't have to justify themselves to someone else either.
That's my .02 cents.

I remember a thread about a year ago where some people were saying that if you don't play an instrument, you have no right to critique a band.CrossfireRadio wrote: B.

...then I would say some shit like, "Oh, thanks for paying the cover...enjoy the rest of the show mother-fucker!"
And then dedicate the next song to them.

There is a big difference between saying a band sucks and simply saying you don't like them.
I can't count how many vokills bands I didn't like, but thought that the band was great. I don't like vokills, or disco, or rap, or, well, you get the idea. I don't like Honky-Tonk Badonkadonk, but some of the instrumental is very good stuff. Some (not me) might say the same thing about Frank Zappa.
Saying you don't like a band is a personal preference.
Saying they suck is criticism.
People should understand the difference and act accordingly.

Dee Snider once said that when someone says they hate Twisted Sister, it means they know about Twisted Sister. Mission Accomplished.
In fact, I wish folks were more forthcoming with what they like and don't like about the music I'm a part of. "I don't like your band" is just fine with me as long as they say why.--->JMS
