Story time...

We were doing a gig about three or four years ago and had this opening band. It was a rather large room we were playing, but we had full FOH support. Well, the guitarist rolls in with not one Marshall cabinet, not two Marshall cabinets, not three Marshall cabinets, but four freaking Marshall cabinets. He had two 4x12s, a 2x12, and a 2x12 combo amp...to open! And with full production support. It was funny when the sound engineer pointed one SM57 at a speaker.

I can't remember the last time I brought more than one of my 4x10s to a gig. Of course, Tara helps me carry my cab when she's at a gig.

Why would anyone need more than one 12 inch guitar speaker at a gig? I got a marshall stack just like anyone else, but I would much rather drag around my single vintage 30 cab. It's a lot lighter and it sounds just as good through the pa. The only practical reason for a 412 is outdoor gigs if vocals are the only thing running through the pa.

As I get older, I see less and less of a need for heavy stuff. No matter how cool it is. The lighter stuff sounds just as good for live sound.

They do look really cool, though.

Why would anyone need more than one 12 inch guitar speaker at a gig?

Some of us still play lots of gigs where the PA really isn't there for everything. I also don't like the sound or response of a 1x12. There's just something about the way a box of 4 12" speakers works together. I'm also one for making a "band mix." It's never an issue.

(I just ordered a 6x12. I can't wait.)

did you order an Emperor 6x12 cab OKick??? High on Fire uses the 4x12s and they look and sound awesome...

The Emperors look bad ass. It's crazy how they are adamant about not putting casters on their cabs. I can dig how they are big into the cosmetics of their enclosures, but for boxes that size, I'd want casters.

What is the impedance on those? 5.33 ohms? 10.66 ohms? 12 ohms?

I did order an Emperor 6x12. It's going to be orange stain with a salt and pepper grill cloth. According to Emperor, it will be 8 ohms. I plan on pulling off the back to check out the wiring once it gets here next week.

I already checked one of these out when another band around here had 2 of them. The sound was the perfect live guitar sound. It was big and clear. The guys even let me check them out afterward. I picked one up and it was just a little heavier than an Orange 4x12, so... Yeah. hahaha...

My new band is talking to Samara about hooking up some gigs. If we get over to Altoona, I'll let y'all know so you can check it out.

They must be special order 12 ohm speakers. 3 series wired pairs, all wired in parallel.

I actually think the use of a 4x12 REQUIRES a larger PA system. The problem with 4x12 cabinets, especially the non angled ones, is that they are VERY direcitonal. Think of a trumpet or a trombone... more than 5-10 degrees off axis and you hear a very mellow tone. But, if you are right in front of the bell, man is it loud and peircing. The same is true for 4x12s. To smooth that response out, you actually need to mic it and put it into the PA to spread that sound out more over more area.

Additionally, IMO there is no PA too small to mic a guitar amp. Any cabinet that can reproduce vocals can reproduce guitar too.

Yep Ron, it works mathematically, but the power distribution would be uneven, and that would defeat the whole purpose for getting a 6x12... unless you are just looking for a stage prop.

Understood... maybe that is part of their "sound". Perhaps the 8 ohm drivers are at the bottom to help boost them somewhat since they are firing at your shins, or maybe they put them at the top to make the stage sound louder at ear level. I dunno.
