Crate Bluevoodoo 120 tubes

Post by Metalboy52 »

I get a lot of crap about my head but I like it. I've been messing with retubing it for better tone and gain etc.. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what tubes I should try? It came factory withGroove Tube 6L6 power and 12ax7's for preamp. Right now I'm running electro harmonix same numbers.

As for the amp, if you like it, it's good. Use what works for you.

As for tubes, kind'a depends on what you're looking to get out of it. If you're
after gain, try TungSol 12ax7s. They breakup earlier and have a good tone
to them.

If you want MORE gain even earlier, can try the... think they're called Silver
Dragon 12ax7s. I've never heard them (As far as I know) but they break up
pretty quick.

JJ 12ax7 get a great tone. I've switched my one floor pre to them recently
and will be sticking to them. There's also a JJ Hi-Performance 12AX7 that
sounds pretty interesting. Apparently, it reduces noise, and has more bottom
and mids.

There are Telefunkens, NOS of others that would be cool, just depends on
how much you're looking to spend.

If you can easily get enough gain, might look at 5751s, 12AT7s, or even 12AUs.

Check out tubedepot.com. They have different options as far as their testing
(If a tube is more prone to higher gains, matching, noise, etc.).

They probably have info and options (Matched sets, etc.) on the 6L6s as well.

The BLACK SABLE SED 6L6GC look like a good option, but are a little pricey.
My main amp uses EL84s.

I'll check all that out. A friend of mine is bringing some tungsol's for me to try. I wish I knew more people that had tubes lying around so I wouldn't have to spend the money.

Roman, i have a complete retube kit that is worth every penny that is for high gain Mesas- it would sound killer in your head. its a matched JJ, Tungsol, Penta, Ruby, and Sovtek LP with 4 matched SEDs 6l6s. i got rid of the amp i bought them for so i don't need 'em. i run the same set in my Mesa, and i get killer tone with them. paid 175- i'll sell them to ya for 140- sounds $$$ but cheap tubes really do sound like shit and will ruin your tone...
i'll even meet ya halfway so you don't have to drive so far...

That is a deal. I'll let you know in a couple of days if I can get them. Gotta wait for a comp check.

hey my amp is a crate bluVooDoo 120 and the same I am running electro harmonics and i love it everyone knocked mine to,until they needed to borrow it then they were impressed. Crate has a bad name and when they see it they turn there nose up at it.

Personally, I'm not an ENGL fan, they always sound compressed.

Running a Line 6 Spider Valve now, but SERIOUSLY considering another 5150.
