Am I in the minority for wishing they'd put out another album like Diabolus in Musica? Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss, and South of Heaven are all great albums but I've heard them done over enough. Man do I love Diabolus.

Slayer's a lot like the AC/DC of trash metal. They're consistent. You have a pretty good idea of what you're getting with every album. You know it's going to deliver the goods. It's not going to be ground-breaking or turn the music world upside down.

Those things are neither good nor bad.

I often wonder if they avoid trying anything really new or "ground breaking" because they have a formula that they know people will like and will sell records?

Is it just me or does the production of Death Magnetic just sound so much more vibrant compared to this? I noticed this especially in the guitars. Fidelman really disagreed with Rubin about the mix of DM, but in the end, perhaps Rubin was right.

Excellent comparison! I enjoy both those bands (in very small doses) for exactly those reasons. This is neither good or bad, but it is what it is.

I am gonna disagree with you on one thing Keith. Thats the first song I ever heard in the modern Slayer era that doesnt sound like the rhythm guitars were recorded through their signature marshall sound. That single note rhythm is really void of gain structure; which I really dig. The leads go right back to the boosted JCM sound; but I find the rhythm sound kinda cool for a band who never has wavered too far from a certain sound.

I picked up the last album even though I pretty much told everyone that I wouldnt. After about 5 listens I really started to dig it. I kinda wish that they would have stayed away from the Jesus Christ is an asshole vibes; but I guess thats Kerry King just writing what he thinks will sell Slayer albums.

I will buy the disc; because for me these guys are the one band I have listened to and supported for 23 years. Its kind of a thing I just feel compelled to do. The worst part is that at the end of the day I dont even find King and Hannemans lead playing that bad; maybe because I have listened to so many of their atonal guitar solos I cant decipher what a shredder would even play over their bizarre rhythms.

I remember reading an interview with King once & he said he doesn't believe all the Jesus/God hating lyrics he writes, but he does it because he knows it'll get a rise out of people.

I just think it's funny when people go on about how evil a band they are & you know they are sitting backstage, laughing, saying "Can you believe they still believe this shit?"

I read that Tom Araya is actually a devoted christian and has been for years. His kids are all attending christian schools. I just read an interview where he says as soon as the shows done he's on a plane flying back to his wife and kids to take them on bike rides and help with home work!

Tom is very much a Christian. He always seemed like a cool dude in interviews. Though Kerry King looks like a scary dude you wouldn't want to fuck with, he graduated valedictorian of his high school class; he's a pretty smart cat. I don't think a lot of people give cats like Slayer credit for who they are as people.

We've talked about this on here before, but a lot of the satanic stuff in music is just smoke and mirrors. Glen Benton is the only one who I think actually takes the "Hail Satan!" stuff seriously, and even with him, I wonder how much of it is an act.

Chad, I'm listening to the track for the first time right now, and I totally agree with you. I love the tone on this, and Slayer's tone has always been hit and miss for me. The note definition on this tune couldn't be any better.

As a heavy band that always had a good amount of mids in their guitar tone, I always found it ironic that the myriad of bands trying to copy Slayer's sound do the opposite and scoop their mids.

The reason why I said this is I find myself singing along with the tunes sometimes when I am working in my yard. Its just funny in a way that Im out painting my wooden picket fence and singing "Ive made my choice, 666" or I am planting grass seed "I'll take the devil anyday; hail satan"

Very much a gimmick band. I dig their music though. Im just glad they are still making music after all these years without changing styles....unlike Metallica! Thank God Metallica is starting to head in the right direction again.
Slayer knows what works for them and they stick to that. I dont really pay attention their newer lyrics much. They are trying too hard to be anti-God and evil. They dont want you to see their off days where they are playing golf dressed like tiger woods.

For the record, Jeff Hanneman is totally underrated. He wrote most of Slayer's classic songs. Kerry Queen gets too much recognition when people think about slayer. He is the biggest sellout wannabe gimmick lord in thrash metal. I like the band he is in, but dislike him.

Hanneman writes may better songs IMO and wrote most of the songs Slayer are known for. King is a loud mouth poser- i met the guy once he was a total dick. i tried to shake his hand and gave him a quick "Great job on Diabolus. You guys are on fire." i got the "i have things to do" response that i countered with "don't let me slow ya down tough guy." he stared at me dumbly and didn't say anything and walked away. not being an ass, but he knows he would have got his ass kicked lol.

but back to the new song- was i the only one waitng for some kind of bridge or key change that never happened? the song needed some kind of curve ball that never came making it pretty ordinary...
