Pittsburgh Pirates might as well fold.

Post by xero380 »

The Pittsburgh Pirates have dealt shortstop Jack Wilson and right-handed pitcher Ian Snell to the Seattle Mariners for shortstop Ronny Cedeno, first baseman Jeff Clement, and right-handed pitching prospects Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock, the Pirates announced Wednesday.

MLB Rumor Central

ESPN Insider has the updated buzz from the Major League Baseball rumor mill.
Story Insider

The team said Cedeno will report directly to the Pirates, while Clement is headed to Triple-A Indianapolis and Pribanic, Lorin and Adcock are being assigned to Class A teams.

Clement, Seattle's first-round pick and the third overall selection in the 2005 draft, was hitting .288 with 33 doubles, 14 home runs, 68 RBIs and 65 runs scored at Triple-A Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League.

"Our scouts have consistently projected Clement to be an everyday major league contributor with the power to hit 20-plus home runs," Pirates GM Neal Huntington said.

Wilson, who was the Pirates' longest-tenured player, is hitting .267 with four home runs and 31 RBIs.

The Mariners made the trade for Wilson perhaps thinking about making the team better for 2010, as well as 2009. The shortstop has a contractual option for next season, for $8.4 million, and it may be that the Mariners will choose to exercise that option -- something that the Pirates were not going to do.

"This was an opportunity for us to acquire a veteran shortstop, a former All-Star player, with leadership qualities and above-average defensive skills," Mariners general manager Jack Zdurienick said. "As we move forward over the next few years it is nice to know that we have solidified the shortstop position."

The Mariners also think Snell can restart his stalled career. The 27-year-old Snell had a 0.96 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Indianapolis, after starting the season 2-8 with a 5.36 ERA in 15 starts for Pittsburgh.

Zdurienick called Snell "a talented pitcher with major league experience who now has an opportunity restart his career after a very successful reassignment in Indianapolis."

Seattle had acquired Cedeno in the offseason from the Chicago Cubs. He struggled after the Mariners gave him their shortstop job this month by trading Yuniesky Betancourt to Kansas City. Cedeno is hitless in his last 26 at-bats and is batting .167 in 59 games. The 26-year-old's contract ends after this season.

The Pirates will NEVER fold. The rest of the Major League needs them for a farm team. They have become a good feeder program. That's their niche...

Let's not forget about Freddy Sanchez to the Giants. I am not a huge baseball fan but then again they havent had a decent season since I was 8 years old, so that could be the reason. There really is no reasonable explanation to consistantly year after year trade every decent player you have. this year alone was McClouth, Morgan, Laroche, Wilson, Snell, and now Sanchez. I'm surprised Duke and Doumit are still there. Tony Cornheiser was right....they are a disgrace to major league sports everywhere.

I'm not a huge baseball fan I try to follow the Pirates just because they are 'local.' However it just seems to me that they trade all of these 'good' players and it makes everyone angry but the only thing I can think is that they were in last place with them so.....

They can be in last place without them.

Give them 3-5 years and they'll be a winning team again, and by winning I mean over .500. This is what they need to do. They aren't doing anything with them so they might as well get some good prospects out of them while they have some kind of value and start from the ground up.

The other side of the state though the Phillies are getting Cliff Lee from the Indians...kinda sad they didn't try for Halladay, but I don't think Toronto would trade for what the Injuns got. Good job none the less Philly...But being a Marlins fan...screw ya too.

The team was only 7 games back in their logjammed division when this year's "rebuilding" began....I'M DONE!!! They proceeded to trade away one of the best defensive infields in baseball......I am officially donning a Phillies cap from now on. If the city of Pittsburgh continues to wholeheartedly support the organization by attending games, it is the city of chumps not champs.....here's an idea.....let's relocate and call the team Indianapolis

Keep buying tickets and supporting them, and they will have no incentive to change. They don't need to be a winning team to make money. They are a business man's dream. Low overhead and lots of revenue.

As for Tony Cornholer, he's an ass. He trAys to make himself look good by kissin ass. He is a total douche bag. I hate him
Oh I totally agree with you that Cornheiser is a piece of shit. Pardon the Interruption pisses me off every day I watch it. Though for some reason I can't turn it off. hahaha. But from a logical standpoint he was absolutely right about the Pirates. To think the Steelers and Penguins have brushed off some pathetic seasons to win 2 Superbowls, and a Stanley Cup in the past 4 years has to be a dark cloud hanging over the Pirates organization. As I stated before I am not a huge baseball fan but as a devoted Pittsburgh sports fan its very pathetic and frusterating to watch. But as Meatloaf once said "2 Outta 3 aint bad"
