Hey
Cool to hear feedback, but can we not turn this into a drug thing. I'm just curious to hear everyone's thoughts on the new stuff.
I hate using cheesy terms like "Bittersweet" but for a huge Alice fan like myself thats excatly what this new song is. I can't help but to wonder what Staley would have put to that music, but at the same time I understand the man's dead and the rest of the band (who still kicks ass) need to earn a paycheck. Staley can't be replaced plain and simple but I hope it goes good for the rest of the band.
Either way, I think its a good song regardless ; just not sure it will grab me like the AIC of old, I guess we'll have to wait to hear the rest.

I was living in Cali when Lane was found dead. My brother Chad(huge AIC fan) was destroyed by the news. We paid homage all weekend long only listening to AIC over and over again. Everytime we cracked a beer we tipped to Layne. I think Chad even got a little weepy, but he'd never admit to that.......Wonder what my bro thinks of this new tune? I think it's great and can't wait for the NEW album to be released.

I dig the tune. Does DuVall play guitar, because I think when playd live, the intro would lose a lot of its UMMMPH with just Jerry?
I think a lot of the AIC vocal sound just wasn't Layne, but how well he harmonized with Jerry. They still have that haunting harmony, which seems to have helped them retain their sound.

"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
There's no doubt that most of the old "AiC sound" is here. I like it, really. And DuVall puts a good twist on it. It's just weird hearing new AiC when you "knew" AiC "died with Layne". Course with Cantrell's haunting backing vocals, and the all the dark musical undertones, it still mostly matches up, other than the eerie howls of Layne, and DuVall himself isn't bad, for having to stand in those shoes. His voice doesn't really sound that far off, except when it comes to the stand-out points where Layne's would clearly echo
Definite kudos for giving a decent (COMPARABLE) vocalist the chance to fill in for someone who's voice is so difficult to emulate

Duvall does play guitar. But Layne never played guitar when I saw them live.
I am interested to hear this, but I didn't care for the albums after Dirt.
Facelift and Dirt were excellent albums.

Great band. Every album was terrific and the EPs in between LPs were
better than a lot of other's total output.
Glad they're carrying on. Have been looking forward to hearing what
they'd come out with. Seem to be sticking with what they do, which is
cool.
This tune's okay. Kind of the same-ish for 7:00. Would have liked to
have heard a stronger, more "standout" chorus or something to change
things up. With a 7 minute tune, would like more dynamics somewhere.
The harmonies, as always, are great. One the best bands EVER in that
department. Downside (As with King's X. Another favourite and great
harmonies)'s, they sometimes overuse them and they lose the efficacy.
Their albums always have a good range of tempos and all, so that'll be
something to check out. They might've put this out to allay the concerns
of fans, which is probably a good move.
Cool they're back and hope they stick around.

hey
I agree with Killjingle that the more Jerry started singing the less I liked it. He could harmonize with Layne's voice great but at lead vocals I thought he was a little dull at best. Layne always did the projective vocals and all the high notes, I'll be curious to hear if that same kind of vocal power will be used by Duvall or if they will just fill it in with harmonys.

hey
Hey Dave,
Actually Layne did nearly all of the earlier lyric writing right up to the 3 legged dog album (which happens to be my least favorite, and their least successful). Cantrell always did a little though here and there.
Layne came up with most of the lyrics that stuck with the fans like Them Bones, Down in a hole, Man in the Box, Love hate love, etc. He had a way of being painfully honest with his lyrics and I think thats why a lot of people could connect.
Another concern with the new stuff is if Duvall can bring as interesting life experiences into the fold.
A good example is Mad Season. It was a one off side project with McCready of Pearl Jam and a couple members from the Screaming Trees. That cd vocally and lyrically was Layne only and it totally smoked!

Re: hey
Yea I dont think that Cantrell could have come up with lyrics like Chemical Addiction, Sickman, Godsmack, or Junkman just to name a few without being an addict himself like Layne. Layne's inner demons came out thru his lyrics and he wasnt afraid to show them. It was his only expression of the pain I believe of being a junkie. His only Escape!THEM BONES wrote:Hey Dave,
