How Low?

Post by felix'apprentice »

Just curious. How low do you guitar players keep your action?

Mine right now .. i cant fit a guitar pick under it. its real nice - only problem, is sometimes if im not careful i get a slight buzz.

What guage strings are you using? I'm rockin the 10 gauge - wanted to change it to 11's but i woulda have to had my floyd rose reset :? and i was told a girl shouldnt be using 11's - pfff. personally i loved the 11's....anyways.

So, I guess my question is. How low is your action? and is the slight buzz a big deal?

I use whatever string i can manage to find. They usually start with 10 or 11 on the top and work down to about 54-56. I can't really afford new full sets of strings (i know, they're like 5 bucks, shut up), so i use freak sets.

As for action tho, whatever feels comfortable to you. Ive tried lowering my action to where it plays with the greatest of ease, but if you tend to get carried away and fly off into space, you'll have a big problem with noise because your strong strumming causes the string to vibrate further. Sometimes it can be the point to where it sounds out of tune (or what I call, fucking awesome*). Give yourself at least a little room in case you get into it. As soon as you find your spot (chances are, you'll be calm and playing easily), turn it up just a hair higher. If you set them too high tho, you'll strain yourself to fret properly.

Just experiment and find out what works for you. Nobody can tell you how to set up your own guitar. Spend a week going up and down with the truss rod. Crank it a quarter turn, let it sit overnight, see what it feels like in the morning. Repeat. You'll get it.

And no matter how you set it up, if you're not careful, you'll always get a buzz noise.

*theres actually a technique to it. When you strike a string hard enough, it creates excessive tension. Tension causes sharpness in notation, and excessive tension will cause notes to go sharp, especially while bending. If you hold two strings at the same time and do this, such as the 8th fret on the high E/B strings (C chord) while playing in G, this creates a fucking crazy howling noise, but yet can be manipulated to stay in key. For audio reference, find Stevie's live version of the Texas Flood. The best one is the one with Tom' wearing the red hat. Think it was also released as a CD.
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.
