Guitar Speaker Selection

I'm building 2 2x12 speaker cabs and currently have 2 Vintage 30's. I would like to get another type of speaker for the other cab that would complement the Vintage 30. Plus that would give me 2 different tones to choose from if I only want to drag along one cab. I'm looking for a good heavy/modern/progressive tone. Think Opeth meets In Flames...

Amp:
Mesa Rectifier Preamp into 50/50 power amp

Cabs:
Sealed
Roughly 2.2 cubic feet per speaker

Any thoughts/suggestions/experiences are greatly appreciated!

the new big thing in metal is mixing the Celestion 100 with a Vintage 30. the 100 watters are supposed to have really tight low end with a ton of headroom and are supposed to be very transparent without the mid scoop a Celestion 75 has. then the 30s mixed with it would bring in that super important mid range to your sound.
sounds reasonable, but i've only read about it; i've never been in a room with the setup...

Check out the Avatar cab website. They have some pretty cool speaker combinations if memory serves. They give some decent explanations (or used to) of how the combinations work.

I have the G12K-100 Celestion's in my cabs with my ENGL PowerBall and I love them.They have a tight sound and a slightly scooped midrange. They can handle a lot of lows as well,so if you push the low end they don't get all woofy. Don't get them confused with the GT-100's-they are basically the same as the GT-75's with more wattage,they have a different sound than the GK's.

I have a set of old Mesa 2x12 cabs (built around '87 or so) that I loaded with a Vintage 30 in the top & an EVM12L in the bottom that sound sweet & slam. The cabs came with the EVs top & bottom but lacked punch in the midrange. After I stuck the Vintage 30s in 'em problem solved. The EVs are heavy as hell and to me have a somewhat flat response but maintain good tone at any volume. I loved these cabs until I picked up my Recto 4x12s with all Vintage 30s. Probably the last cab I'll ever buy.
