Actually more along the lines of $100/sqft for those places. You can build a purpose-designed building for just a little bit more.

It's never going to happen.

What you propose will never come to fruition.

Real estate taxes can cripple any business, but its not always size & location that matter.

A few things to look for are buildings assessed before 1957, are not brick and are in a township like Logan or Allegheny. Unless you are talking 2+ acres under roof, the taxes (and overhead) on these buildings are fairly cheap, especially when compared to ones built during the past 20 years.

wow lot of great posts in this thread (and alot of posts lol) to much reading :P

The music scene in altoona has nothing but a whole lotta variety, and some genre's not even mentioned..

CrossFire-Radio was created with unsigned bands in mind to help get their music out to those that cant hear it close up... Are we any kind of label? no...(would be nice if we could be an indie label, dunno where to start though)

There are quite a few bands on Rockpage (and other sites) that we play on the station. The bands put their music on "myspace" and its mostly "their fans" that listen to them. When played on CFR, more than just fans hear them.

There have been a few bands in the altoona area that we have asked about putting their music up. "sure, once we get it on CD, we'll send it to you" (and that was about 2 years ago).

So it seems that people don't believe in internet radio either as much as they believe "some strange guy" coming to the forums and wanting to pick up the pace of the music scene in altoona.

Most bands are there just to play? just having fun? Nothing wrong at all with that... But out of all the bands in Altoona, none of them wants to go anywhere? ("outside the box")

We have been to many shows here in town.. 30 something, aldo's(mostly), umm whats the name of that bar up in claysburg? lol

I have introduced myself to a couple bands, they say "oh okay", and thats pretty much it.

Which would bring to mind - "what if" someone approached you, and did want you to open for a "mainstream" band... The "Altoona Attitude" would just pretty much state "oh okay" and go back to hooking up their set.

If we could - we would - CrossFire Bar - Home to Altoona Bands...

We have actually looked into several places around here and "almost" had 1 till the owner screwed us, and blamed it on his wife... and the other place we was looking into... all of a sudden "burnt down" go figure.. =\

Be a great name for a place... Tony Montana's 'Little Havana'

It is possible.

But its an uphill battle just in finding and reading all the laws that would possibly apply. You've got PLCB, Code, Tax, etc. Then finding out the 5-W's on all the places around that tried and failed (which are tons).

Just because other people failed, doesn't mean it isn't possible. There are more factors involved that just "So-and-so failed, you will too".

I'm finding a lot of places fail because the owners relied too much on the wrong 'things' because they didn't think they had to worry about 'that' anymore. (Insert anything you can think of and it seems to have taken at least one business down)

Plus timing can be everything when dealing with business ventures.

Those of you that are interested, and that are not gigging this friday. Come to Rubines.. I am playing.. but I would like to share some ideas, on how we can move in a positive direction with this areas music scene.
I will be there from about.6:30/7:00 till close. Big Jim.. I was gonna come down to Pelly's last night to chat it up with you but my woman kinda stood in my way.. That doesnt happen very often, cause she is usually with me.. but I have some real feelings, and respect for this one so I chose to stay in under my own recognance, However I will be down next monday..Anyway.. I feel that everyones views are valuable to this. My best ideas usually come to me from talking to others. I really don't expect anyone from here to come. I think I might have seen two of you at one of my shows and one of them was Jim Price.. haha Unity!! I guess thats the respect I get for supporting other bands... no matter... I will be there if anyone wants to hang out and chat about why this is important for ALL OF US.

About 12 years ago a friend of mine wanted to buy that building. They wanted over a million dollars for it at that time.

theres surely enough room for a band.. Rubines actually has quite the little scene. There is a band that plays there called the Remnants.. they are an incredible band. Matt Burns and Bodacious B. Southern stuff from a guy named Toker. The House band, Felix and the Hurricanes, and the list goes on.

Yeah, what cucu96 said. Rubine's is one of our favorite local places to hang, but ya gotta watch out for that stray cue ball.
