Dont own a vw

Post by thebattle »

I own a vw golf and ugh $$$$ I have alot of work done to mine so it makes it harder for me to get rid of it every time it fu*ks me

I had 3 window regulators go in 3 months bad luck i guess. Preety shitty driving around with window shims. I called the dealership 110.37 just to take the panels off to tell me what i already know is wrong and 897$ +tax. I told them i thought it was a ridiculous price when i can buy the repair kits for 50$ a window. "Yes i know its alot to swallow" they told me it was 350$ in parts . NICE TRY VW your not suckering me

But if yah got a vw and would like to know something im fairly knowledgeable

I replaced one of those on my wife's Honda Accord. It wasn't that bad, and I'm by no means a mechanical whiz. Tearing the door apart was the scariest thing, hoping I wouldn't break or lose something. Just take your time, and it's not too bad.

vw door panels are a pain in the ass there like 6 screws hidden behind the door handle then you got about 12 1/2 bolts holding a 1/4 steel plate and behind that the regualtor is attached too. I seen diy on it and it still looks like a pain in the ass

I used to detail cars. And by cars, I mean the biggest pieces of shit my boss could find at the auction. I used to have to take door panels off and actually paint them  . haha! They all suck, not just V-dub.

Interiors suck to deal period. But rewarding if you can deal with them well.

My first three cars were all VW's; a '69 Bug and '75 and '79 Rabbits. They all had their individual issues; probably the worst was the recurring oil leaks on the '79 Rabbit until I got rid of it.

My current car, a '98 Ford Escort wagon, has been pretty good to me overall. I'm having a few more maintenance issues with it now since it has surpassed the 150,000 mile mark, but I'm still having fewer problems with it than my previous car (a 1990 Nissan Sentra). I just put $200 into an electrical repair due to a design flaw on the car; the wiring into the rear hatch frays every few years from the opening and closing of the hatch, and when the wires break totally, the brake light goes off and my shift lock doesn't let me out of 'park.' That's the second time that has happened to me.

Pure awesomeness.

Sorry, I'm in total love with Porsche. I'd marry one. Maybe move out west and marry a few.
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

I think thats a terrible reason a cars a car is the way is see it.

Don't get me wrong i love my vw. Just very costly

These are the repairs i've done in the following years.

Replace shocks/struts all the way around. The rear even seen it twice!-500
Both driver and passenger wheel bearings passenger side twice. 150
front axel twice-200
mass air flow sensor twice-240
oil pan-90
Transmission-1750
Power steering system from rack down 2,065

I have alot of money into repairs after market is close too. Well pretty much everything that has been replaced has been subd with a better part.

18" and lowered 2 inches can cause alot of these problems haha

I was going to say, all those problems you listed sound very much like ones that can be cured with a change in driving style.

A different brand car isn't going to help you one bit.

MAF sensor:
My guess is you have a cold air intake that is different in size from the stock box, causing the ECU to have to compensate (usually by slinging more fuel). This creates more HP but also wears out a MAF sensor quicker. Heck even the oil on a K&N filter will ruin a MAF that is really sensative. AEM makes a 'dry flow' air filter that is really great.

Shocks, axles, oil pan:
You said it your self, lowering 2" definitely caused a good portion of these issues. Your probably bottoming out the shocks and crushing the valve bodies. Get some coilovers that are designed to be shorter from the start.

CV joints are designed around a certain angle. Outside that angle they can really degrade fast.

You can't hit your oil pan nearly as easy at the stock height :)

Bearings:
Lowering the car puts more lateral stress on the bearing points. Where the car would normally 'roll' a bit and transfer that stress (CG change) down the vertical axis, lower the car (which prevents 'roll' due to permanent CG change) keeps more of that force in the lateral plane.

If you look at a wheel bearing, the two part old-school design, not the new age dual-offset sealed kind (look like a giant skate bearing, they use the exact same principle, its just easier to see in the old school design). There is an angle to the set. The inside and outside have complimentary angles. This angle is what carries the lateral loads. The steeper the angle the more lateral load it can take, but this also takes away from the vertical load capability. A car spends a majority of its time going straight or taking low speed 'city' turns. So the bearings are usually inclined less (flatter profile) in a street car. This provides for a long life in the usual 'street' duty. If you drive outside of that profile of straight, with low speed turns, and about 30% of those being highway on-off ramps, you'll need to replace your bearings more often.

Those old-school bearing have one important advantage to the sealed dual-offset design. You can put more torque through them (at the castle nut) to increase their lateral capabiity at the expense of a little extra wear.

Transmission:
You really are driving hard when you drop a transmission. Or you killed it when you killed your oil pan ;)

If you ever want I can take a ride with you and help you figure out what is happening in the car and how to alter your driving to sustain its working life. The more you ask of the car beyond factory, the more thorough your maintainance schedule needs to be.

Oh and race/aftermarket parts have a lower life expectancy than OE stuff. Race parts assume that you'll be replacing them more often because you are harder on them.

He did? Cool....

Then why isn't it called HW (Hitler Wagen)?

Just curious since I never heard that before.....

:D

P.S. So I guess their original slogan when Hitler was the CEO was

"FarFromJuden"?
"Too Cool for Flames"
"Fast as a Greyhound, Tough as Leather and Hard as Krupp Steel" AH 1935

it's really case by case as far as car problems go. you could buy a brand new car and the motor could lock up as soon as you leave the lot.

i have a gmc jimmy that is 12 years old. it has seen everything from travel to jobsites, travel to gigs, vacations, pulling my quad, and everything in between. it runs perfectly (minus normal wear and tear stuff). i have a friend who sold a 2002 (i think) blazer because of all the problems it had. same truck...different results.

of course if you do a lot of aftermarket mods to a car and race it, or just really abuse a car...then you could have some problems (like thebattle). just like if you take your truck off road...there is a lot that can break in one afternoon. if you have the money to do the upkeep...then play away.

I've never owned a VW, so I can't vouch for their reliability. But I'm a fan simply for the sake of their engineering and production design. I used to think the term 'German engineering' was a hoax or a myth or just a sales pitch. It is not. The Germans are far beyond what we're doing in the States as far as assembly and automation. Hitler's little 'peoples' car' is the most popular vehicle ever created. That's no small feat. The original Beetles are still used today as taxis in Mexico!!!

Check out a VW factory:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd5WGLWNllA

This factory is not exactly for their Beetle (It's for their luxury Phaeton), but notice the workers tool carts. There's no cords providing power to them. They are placed over certain spots in the floor and get wireless power by acting as the secondary of a transformer. Their assembly floor is cleaner and more efficient than the Smithsonian! We (the UAW) are paying our assembly workers $35/hr to do work that monkeys in the zoo have mastered. And these guys are spending money designing efficient assembly lines and strict manufacturing standards.

I'm convinced VW, Porsche, Audi, BMW, and many other European manufacturers are far ahead of us in manufacturing efficiency, build quality, and overall design. I've never had a car (domestic or foreign) that wasn't full of issues. Based on what I've found, I'd love me a German car!

just my 2 cents
.

All kinetic, no potential.
