Drumming tips? please (edited)

Do you have any tips on better things to do while playing drums.I am experienced a little I have been playing for 9 years but I would have to say I still suck but I think that maybe because my drum set holds me back I only have a 5 set with a single bass pedal a hihat and a ride/crash cymbal. I love playing all kinds of music and I have no motivation and I think if I have some tips on better ways to play I may feel the motivation needed. Also you can tell me some tips on guitar or violin

(I did not mean that the kit itself I meant that I did not have the cymbals needed)

Your drum set is not holding you back, you dont need 15 pieces to play.
A pocket drummer will get more work than a busy drummer starting out.

Try getting fancy on the high hats open and closing while alternating patterns on the ride...
I really like crashing on the ride as well to really give the music some power during transitions!!
If you haven't started doing Blast Beats then give them a crack!!
Would also try doing some hand drumming and let that style carry over to the trap kit.... Get your toms all going at once and wake up King Kong!!

I've been playing a 4 piece for the last 15 years and feel i've only scratched the surface. It's not the number it's how you use them. One thing you can do is rearrange your kit that can always spark some new ideas. For some motivation goto drummerworld.com or check out bob gatzen on youtube. Learning new styles of music also works.

Don't ever get discouraged. Learning any musical instrument is a never ending adventure. Go out and watch some drummers live. Absorb as much as you can.

Our drummer, Jim, plays a four piece kit, and he slams behind them. I've seen cats with 1,837,568,723,092 piece kits who couldn't hold a pocket or maintain a steady tempo.

I didnt mean the kit its self I meant the fact that I do not have a double bass pedal or I dont have the cymbals I need.

My favorite drummers don't use double pedals...

Except when playing at a 1000bpm in the key of death...

You'd be hard pressed to find better drummers around here than Jsun76 (He's better than he thinks), robthedrummer (I'm sure thats one thing I've said he can get behind!), and hawk (and his son).

If there is anyone else, I just have not met them.

i think we're gonna mix it up...i'm gonna start using my double kick for the side effects. he's gonna only use a single for fedup.

seriously though...maybe at some point we should cover a song by the other. it would be interesting...and brian, you will already know all the words.

I've seen bob have like 5 pieces... then four... then three... then two.... then stuck with a kick... then they work themselves back in, and he never misses a beat.

Doesn't matter how many pieces like everyone said. Some nights I play with a 4 piece, some nights a 5, some nights a 6 or 7. Depends on the mood and who's kit I'm playing. You can do a lot with a snare, kick, and hats. Work on that combination for a good hour and see just what you can come up with. I do that kind of stuff all the time.

The drum set won't be your issue regardless of size.

I would just go on Youtube and search for tutorials on different techniques and rhythms and such.
