Are you talking about the late 70's band "Crack the Skye" from Pittsburgh? I saw those guys at the Stanley once.

Im gonna shit on this thread and say "new Mastodon fucking sucks!"

Remission was where it's at, and most of Leviathan, but they just lost their edge for me.

I like the new cd. I wasn't into the older stuff until I heard Divinations. I saw them with Slayer and Lamb of God back in 2004 and I thought they sucked. I wished I would have given them a chance back then.

I have given Mastadon several chances and they just don't do it for me.

apparently the Mastodon that I like isnt the direction the band wants to go. I really like "March of the Fire Ants" and "Blood and Thunder" and none of their current writing sounds like that.

Plenty of other stuff out there to listen to...

My fave mastodon song was the one they did with King Diamond on The ATHF Colon Movie. Seriously. I like them, just not enough to own any of their stuff. I'm not much into concept albums though, either.

The new Mastodon is the album of the year for me. It is amazing and gets better with every listen.

I'm glad they "lost their edge." There are enough bands doing that already. I'm glad to see that these guys are brave enough to try something else.

Hell yeah Orangekick!

I listen to enough stuff that not everything needs to be super heavy. I like diverse stuff. There are way too many bands trying to do the same thing.

i really, reeeeeally dig the musicianship alot on Crack the Skye but my gut feeling is that the new vocal approach is going to sound awful live (not that i'm crazy about the vocals before either; an instrumental cd would be just fine by me). it sounds to me like an incredible amount of production on the vocals, which tells me that they're hiding alot of warts like off key moments and shaky melodies. they're already iffy on the vox live to begin with; i'm not sure about the half spoken, low volume vocal approach in the studio will work on the big stage; songs already in that vocal vein like Colony of Birchmen are not they're strong suit live at all.

for me Blood Mountain > Crack the Skye

no matter what, still a killer listen from an interesting, original band...
