Here's my National top 5:

1. David Garibaldi (drums) and Francis "Rocco" Prestia (bass) from Tower of Power. Nobody can touch 'em.

2. Pat Badger (bass) and Paul Geary (drums) of Extreme. VERY underrated.

3. Billy Sheehan (bass) and Gregg Bissonette (drums) of David Lee Roth's first band post-Van Halen.
That band, with Vai on guitar, was pound-for-pound the best band ever put together.

4. Flea (bass) and Chad Smith (drums) of RHCP. Pocket so deep you can park a Mack truck in it.

5. Bootsy Collins (bass) and Tiki Fulwood (drums) of Funkadelic. 'Nuff Said.

Local Top 5, in no order:

1. Bob Watters and Jeff Clapper, The Hurricanes
2. Tom Keith and Steve McCaulley, Korruption
3. John McKnight and Billy Nusom, The Hurricanes
4. Randy Rutherford and Tim Yingling. God I miss Xeno.
5. Matt Popp (on bass) and Matt Carlson of I Enemy.
Dood...

J.D. Blair and Vic Wooten
Blues Brothers definitely. That would be Donald "Duck" Dunn and that dude I can't remember.

ToonaRockGuy is on the money with ToP and Sheehan/Bissonette. Sanchez and McBride also awesome. How about Tony Williams and Ron Carter with Miles Davis? Or, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell? Or, Sting and Stewart Copeland? Or, Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish of Living Colour?

Some good choices here. I will throw another dynamic duo into the mix.

Peter Mars Cowling on bass and Tommy Aldridge on drums when they played with The Pat Travers Band

Glad to see a lot of mention of Duck Dunn! He is still my favorite bass player of all-time. Everything he plays just grooves but still retains a melodic edge. One of my "pet riffs" is a sliding major pentatonic thing that I stole off of Dunn a long time. Dunn uses a lot of major pentatonics in his playing. That's what the main groove is based off of in Shake Your Tail Feather. It's really nothing all that complicated, but Dunn just gives it his trademark staccato pocket and presto: It kicks ass! Check out the extended version of the Blues Brothers' version of Sweet Home Chicago. It totally changed my perception of what can be done on bass during a 12 bar shuffle. He plays behind, in front, inside, and outside of the beat. I love Jaco. I love Wooten. I love Sheehan (as in Billy but also Bobby, rest his soul, but the cat who took his place in Blues Traveler kicks immense amounts of ass as well), but bass wouldn't be where it is today without Duck Dunn, James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, and of course, Sir Paul McCartney.

Rage Against the Machine had an amazing rhythm section, however I can't stand the vocals.

What about Geddy Lee and Neil Peart (sp), by far one of the best rhythm sections out there.

Carlos Santana had some awsome Latin rhythm sections in the 70's.

Alan Woody and Matt Abts of Gov. Mule were one of the best.
