Yeah, I don't see it as much of a departure for Derek. It's blues and R&B/soul. I happen to love his Eastern stuff, as a steel player, I can tell you he has AMAZING precision and control on that stuff. Plus it's so different, it's like opening a window on a spring day. I remember telling MJB that DT has an amazing voice for someone who never sings a note. Not his speaking voice, his VOICE.mjb wrote:i don't think it's a departure at all, just an artist that is evolveing and not pigeon holed into anything. i mean, he pretty much covers alot of genres so to speak. it's different from his last one, in the case there isn't any of the eastern indian stuff on it, which personally, gets alittle boring to me anyway, although i can appreciate it. the new album totally kicks ass and most of the stuff he did, when you seen him at the state theatre a few months back. that show rocked!ZappasXWife wrote:Ah yes the Bob Dylan show. I have been listening to it almost every week for the last few years. It is, well to be honest, sometimes hard to take. I love it though mostly for his great sarcasm and stories. And that voice, wow if he could sing as smooth as he speaks. The music he plays is sometimes so cornball and old-fashioned i can't stand it. Don't know what show you heard but believe me its not all 'old blues'. Its entertaining though to say the least.
LOVE Deep Tracks most of the time. Except when they insist on playing Rennaisance and some other things I find obnoxious...Also Jam On. As far as CDs I having been groovin on Joe Strummer & Mesceleros lately. I also like a few Pearl Jam songs I recently downloaded from the Into the Wild movie. I know lots of you don't like that band but I think their lyrics are great and really their style has gone beyond the grunge that they started with. Like any band I certainly don't like all their stuff. I love Derek Trucks but heard the latest album is a departure of style for
hime....anyone hear it?
ToonaRock, that Alligator compilation sounds awesome. I love Koko and Etta, and 'Gator has the best roster in blues recording since Chess in the 50's.
Zappa'sX, I have to try and listen to Dylan's show... my boss has really gotten me into the oldtime stuff, and Dylan is extremely knowledgeable on those songs. He's covered stuff that would have died away into obscurity without him, great songs that deserve to live on. The stuff that drives you nuts is probably the stuff I like!

I just recently discovered this band Morphine. They have no guitar player, just drums, fretless bass, and saxaphone.

Check out some of The Decemberists' older stuff. Such as The Legionnaire's Lament or Mariner's Warning. I forget which albums they're on, they have like 8 full-lengths.orangekick wrote:Add:orangekick wrote:Mastodon - Crack the Skye

Cult of Luna - the entire catalog
I'm digging on the latest Apocalyptica album. It has it's moments, and a cool cover of Bowie's Hero.
