can anyone recommend inexpensive venue rentals in the altoona area? or local bars that will work deals for hosting benefit events?

What is the benefit for? Bars usually pay bands to play so getting one for a benefit isn't very hard to do. As far as all ages venues, I don't think we have any left in Altoona. Once in awhile stuff goes on at The Lions Den, I don't have any contact info for Patty the owner anymore though, and The Eldolynn Terrace has been hosting all of those swoopy hair fashion shows the kids these days call pop punk.

Get a hold of Drain The Sorrow on here. Andy, I think, still does stuff with the Lion's Den.

Try Civic Centers like the one in Homer's Gap or the Elk's Lodge etc. They are usually available for that type of thing.

i'd try legion park in hburg...they were easy to deal with for a benefit show.
