Where's your favorite place to play?

Post by metalchurch »

So where's you guys' favorite place to play and why is that?
Good relationship with the owner?
Usually have a good turnout there?
Maybe it's just a consistent gig and you almost know what to expect?

I'm curious to hear which places are the common fav.
If you have a problem narrowing it down to just one, then name a few it doesn't matter..

Diff. places for Diff. reasons

Aldo's- Sorta THE place for underground stuff.

30 something- Zilly, the stage, the layout.

The Smiling Moose in The Burgh- Any place with a crane machine full of porn and a jukebox full of punk and metal is ok in my book.

I dont have a band as you know, but I agree with Aldos and 30 Something cause I like the environment, and I always had a good time there.

There was only one place I hated playing and that was that Warehouse/Knight Bar in Bedford and it wasn't the place. It was the Idiot running the place half assed. For every good experience we had there, we had 2 shitty ones. Oh and that Dungeon place in Carlisle. The people dug us, but that was the worst soundguy I ever dealt with in my life. I told him "hey buddy can you turn down the bass?" he said "Turn it down?" I was like "Yeah it sounds like shit, we can do that on our own. We don't need your help" The fuckin speakers sounded like they were gonna explode or rattle apart. haha

Yeah it doesn't take much to make a shitty night and people like that make it go for the worse in a hurry.... I heard about those places from you and Dave & Don. I could only imagine seeing it in person.

I'm not from this area originally, but Ive been to about 15-maybe 20 bars/resturants and those 2 were my fav places by far. (Bars with bands that is)

Aldo's,30 Something,The Smiling Moose and the 31st Street Pub-both in Pittsburgh,Around the Corner and Dougherty's was a cool place back in the day. I miss Peter C's,when I was in Driven we played there alot,it was a great place for metal bands to play-small,hot as hell in the summer and it just had that "metal atmosphere" when you walked through the door.

Kinda an irregular answer here, but... anywhere i feel comfortable.

'Venue-wise' I'd have to say right now Shaw's in Juniata, but before that it would most definitely have been BigJohn's place. I loved that whole crew.

My last band did Mr. Smalls too, and that IS an incredible place to play!! I also used to love Del's Roadhouse out near Indiana...they can PARTY!!

Currently, it's gotta be the Osceola Hotel for me. People there are so cool, and they really get into it. Great room...lotsa space to move around.

-City Limits, working with Zilly is always a pleasure.

-The Shade Mountain Inn in Middleburg. Played there a ton and was always treated like royalty there.

-The Hitching Post, back in the day when I was playing with the original lineup of Banditos and also with Gin & Juice.

-SCI Cambridge Springs & SCI Muncy. (Ask Hurricane.)

Oh, and of course...

Peter Fucking C's. 'Nuff said.
Dood...

I like to play in my office. That way only I can hear myself. I been paying off and on for quite a number of years, but, I don't think I am good enough to play out. And besides, I don't hold a candle compared to some of you guys ...

Generally I like these qualities
-No smoking
-Stage for a band
-Loading Dock
-Adequate Power
-Room for band
-Good staff

My favorites in no particular order are:
Ace's, Johnstown (Gary is great to work with)
Pasquerella Center/Holiday Inn, Johnstown (All the Crown staff are great - Janet, Mike, Pablo, et al.)
Living and Learning Center at UPJ, Johnstown
7-springs (Alpine Room, Festival Hall/Conference Hall)
Lake Rowena in Ebensburg (Eburg has good staff that does a good good planning events)
Pasquerella Performing Arts Center (PPAC) at UPJ
Roxbury Bandshell
Casino Ballroom in Altoona

Worst place ever to play was Springwood Conference Center in Pgh. They had about the worst owner/manager ever. If you ever get a chance to play there, run away fast!
