After 7 decades in radio, Paul Harvey passed away.

I'd consider myself fortunate if I made it to 90, let alone be able to still speak coherently into a microphone at that age!
I grew up hearing Paul Harvey's news and "Rest of the Story" features daily on WRTA. I actually can do a pretty respectable Paul Harvey impersonation; I think Big Jim has heard it a few times...
Seriously though, Paul's passing helps mark an end of an era. I seriously doubt anybody else in the radio business will ever be able to maintain the type of longevity and respectability that Paul Harvey developed over his seven decades in the business. He had a style and cadence all his own, and he was so established in that style that even the folks who filled in for him had to try to emulate him just to make their own efforts sound legitimate!

This led to some problems for Sean McKay and WFBG years ago. At one point in the late 80's/early 90's, WFBG-AM picked up and was airing Paul Harvey's news and commentaries. Sean started having fun with these, making fun of some of the stuff Paul said, and editing and airing some of his quotes out of context to make him sound senile on the air. (It was funny stuff!) Some of Paul's relatives didn't take too kindly to that and raised a stink about it. I think that played a part in Paul's features eventually returning to WRTA.
Yes, Paul does have family in this area.I was told that Paul Harvey was my 3rd or 4th cousin,I don't know if it's true but I suppose it could be because his father was born in Martinsburg and their last name is actually Aurandt.

To Quote one of Mr. Harvey's sound bites that Sean Mckay liked to use...."The ostrich was blown to bits !"
Music has power..use it carefully!
