No ego?

Post by BDR »

It always gets me when people say "this band has no egos" when advertising for a player or "I have no ego" when an individual is seeking a position with a band.

News flash: If you have no ego, you have no business being on a stage. Thousands of years ago, the stage was designed for attention whores. If you are in this biz, or any other bizfor that matter, that requires you to present yourself and your craft to others, then you have an ego. Sorry.

Now, an ego problem is an entirely different animal. This is someone who is convinced they have more to offer than they actually do and they usually go out of their way to let everyone know about it.

Sorry, pet peeve.

I agree 100% with you Rob. I don't believe in astrology...I think it's a bunch of bullshit. But, I am a Leo, a.k.a. Attention Whore!!!
What I get a kick out of, are people who ARE NOT even in a "working" band and just because they had that "get together" with some guy's entitle's them to have an EGO PROBLEM...Having a couple practice's and a gig at Petey's doesn't entitle you to shit...having a myspace page with some faggy song's doesn't entitle you to shit, being the "best" singer at a karaoke sing off with some other drunks doesn't make you a frontman/lead-singer either.
I know, I'm probably off thread here but I just had to say that when I read this. Sorry.

I haven't seen Gazoo on here for a looooong time.

I definitely have an ego,but NOT the ego problem.
You have to have one to survive in music for as long as you can.
20+ years and not stopping anytime soon.

I like ppl who are confident in their respective craft or who realize that they have the necessary talent to pull off what they are attempting.

What I dont like is ppl who are over confident or judgemental and/or dont have enough real life experiences to give them that approach.

I think a reasonable amount of ego is necessary for anyone to succeed.

I think an over abundance of ego is likely to make someone fail.

I think an under abundance of ego is surely to make someone fail.

How about ego vs talent? I've seen people with huge egos that have little talent. As well as people that have a ton of talent and no ego.

I think for cats who can play there's a definitive amount of egotism that goes with the territory. That's part of the deal.Something drives you to practice and perfect your craft. That my friends is ego, like it or not.Besides remember all those pathetic shoe gazing pussies of the 90's?Staring at the ground with their hair in their eyes to prevent direct contact with anybody.Playing their shitty, out of tune open chords that they could barly get a grip on.Crying about their Daddy or that boyfriend that got away.Barely holdin onto ax.This no doubt was from the overwhelming guilt and shame of knowing that they have 2 guitars and soooo many starving children in third world countries have none. Man i hated that time period of music.Either play the fucker or sit the fuck down.I'm sorry i know there are at least a few lost souls around here that still listen to Pearl Jam.......i'm sorry i just don't know why.Hey the thread is about ego.

AIC are on a whole different level.
I always called them Hard Rock, but being from the same time and place as the rest, I guess they went along for the ride.

Besides "No Ego", I always get a laugh when I read an ad looking for a band member that says, "No Losers" or "No Drunks" or "No Wanna-Be's" or "No Druggies", ect. I always joke that I want to call them up & say, "Hey, I'm interested but people say I'm a fuckin' Loser. I got Drunk as hell last night & I'm about to fade away with a Pinprick but I Want to be in a band! How 'bout a audition"?
I've drank enough beer to float a battleship! Go ahead and Rock & Roll all night if you can but don't party every day!

Yeah I would be wondering how someone with no ego such as that even had a desire to be in a band.

I'd at least talk to the guy to find out where he lost his ego and tell him who to talk to if he needs a refill.

I think the effect ego has on a musician can be a help or a hindrance depending on the genre. When I played metal, I had to overcome a shyness problem, so I adopted a kingshit attitude. It was apropos for what I was doing then, but not only are times different, the style of music I play now demands more of a realness, whereas back in the day it was all about being larger-than-life. I think I'm a lot more comfortable blabbering to the audience now than I was with the whole scream-for-me-longbeach thing, but I never get fully comfortable dealing with an audience. I kinda like that part, it keeps you on your toes.---.JMS
