Record Player

Post by bassist_25 »

Could anybody recommend to me a modern record player? I'm not looking to spend a fortune on an audiophile system, but I'd like a decent turn-table.

I'm looking for a self-contained system, not a component that requires its own power amp or EQ.

Thanks a bunch. :)

I'm not sure if they are serious about the sale yet, but if you are looking for a basic stereo receiver (not 5.1 surround), Circuit City had a few nice Onkyo receivers with turntable inputs (pretty rare nowadays) last week at 20% off. They might start getting serious and dropping to 40 or 50% off soon.

Most of the newer turntables that are half decent come with RCA outputs, and even USB. If you want real fancy, theres technics and numark, but theyre more aimed towards DJ's. My friend got one from xmas, i think it might have been from the walmart online store, and he hasnt had any trouble with it. It had the RCA and USB, so he can hook it into his main stereo, and into his laptop to make mp3's
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

Thanks for the input, guys. I have been noticing that a lot of turn-tables have USB connections. That's pretty cool. Unfortunately, my computer is not in my primary music listening room. I'm going to take a look at my stereo and see what (if any) auxillary connections it has.

Like Jeff pointed out, even though a turntable has RCA output jacks, it's not going to be line level and needs to have an extra preamp section with an RIAA equalization circuit to work.

There are a decent amount of turntables out there, so you are only limited by budget. E-Bay would probably be a good place to search, you might get a steal.

Using a USB connection on a turntable makes me laugh. It defeats the beauty of using a turntable... which is keeping the entire audio path analog. If you wanted to record vinyl to a computer it would come in handy, but unless it's a rare recording, you're better off getting the CD or downloading.

BTW, I was always partial to Denon turntables for quality/price.
... and then the wheel fell off.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I actually ended up going with a Crosley system. I was going to get a component system. I had started looking at turntables and recievers, but then my CD player started crapping out. I nixed the component idea because I would have ended up spending more than I wanted right at the moment for a turntable, CD player, reciever, and decent speakers. I didn't know if I wanted to build an entire second-hand system either, because you never know how worn electronics can be.

I dig the Crosley. It's not an audiophile system, but it shouldn't be at the price I paid for it. So far, I've only listend to my Dire Straits Brothers In Arms disc (I'm at my father's for the weekend), and it sounds great. That's truly a great album, and being on vinyl makes it all the better. I can't wait to go home and pull out the rest of my vinyl to give it all a spin.

Glad you found a turntable man. Now you can enjoy listening to your old vinyl and enjoy quality hi-fi sound.
If it were realistic, I'd love to have everything on vinyl as opposed to cd, but the money and availability are 2 major detractions from doing that.

There's alot of vinyl on ebay, in fact thats where I got most of my collection. Other than ebay there's not many places to find good albums.

In Indiana, there's a place called Backstreet Records that has a lot of vinyl. Last week, I went and picked up a bunch of used vinyl for a dollar. They have new vinyl for good prices as well. I saw some Slayer on vinyl!

Today, I went to a place in State College called Webster's that had a very sizable collection of vinyl. The cheapest stuff they had was around $3. I also saw some Marauders 45s! I picked up some old Santana, Amazing Rythmn Aces, and a few Weather Report discs (which I'm listening to right now).

Hey Paul and Joe,

I inherited I pretty giant collection of vinyl last summer & I'm most likely gonna sell the stuff I don't want. If there's interest I'll type it up into a list (it'll take me awhile though) and send it to you through email.

Yeah Greg, that would be totally cool. I'm sure there's something in your collection that would pique my interest.

Joe - PM sent.
