Where to go...

Post by Big Jim »

Yes, I'm sure a lot of you would like to tell me "where to go" LOL

but......

I'm looking to get a new acoustic/electric guitar for performance/recording and would like some ideas:

I want to be able to try out a dozen or more models & styles to get the one right for me. I've visited the large stores in Rochester, NY and Washington, DC in the past, but was not looking to buy at the time.

What does anyone suggest. I'm able to travel, and willing to spend $1000 + for the one that works best for me.

Hey Jim,

I love my Alvarez and you've played it. I can only imagine how nice a $1000 would sound!

My favorite acoustic / electric is an Alvarez
I've also played a few Taylors that weren't bad
I wish Coke was still Cola and a Joint was a bad place to be.

Jim,

Being that I am a huge proponent of buying used gear especially guitars (more bang for the buck) I would recommend looking at Guitar Center's used gear site. When you get to the home page, enter the following search criteria:

Keyword - acoustic

Select Category - Guitar

Enter price range

Enter a zip code that's relevant and the distance that you want to travel.

Based on a search of:

price - 800 to 1200 and within a 200 mile radius of the 16601 zip, there is some very interesting guitars available.

While buying new is all well and good, let someone else eat the deprecation. Like a car it is amazing how much the price drops on gear once its used and if you are a smart shopper you can get tremendous deals if you look and are patient. If you have an idea of what you want, this is a good way to go. Just be sure to check the instrument completely before you buy. The good thing about GC, if there is a problem you can return within I believe 7 days to any GC. Just make sure that is understood up front.

I hope this is helpful.

I've personally liked the Takamine's they have the quality and sound of a martin, for about a quarter of the price.

Try the Garrisons at Music Emporium. They're on clearance, only because they don't have name recognition locally.
They have carbon-fiber bracing inside, which is lighter, stronger, and has less mass than wood, which allows the top to vibrate freer. I think they're the shyte, YMMV.

Also, even the lower-priced Taylors are good, in fact, I personally prefer their 210 bottom-priced dreadnought over all of their higher-priced cousins. Very Martin-y, with crisp top-end and bottom that vibrates your ribcage. I'm sure you can find one under a grand.

The Seagulls are sweet if you do a lot of fingerpicking. They use woods other manufacturers don't, like wild cherry and silverleaf maple. Their cedar tops aren't for heavy-handed players, but if you have a light to medium touch, they're very responsive, and priced very nicely.

If you're looking for a stage axe, try Wechter. They look kinda weird to me, but they have a double-cutaway and modified neck heel for access, a undersaddle/magnetic/condenser-mic pickup system, and they're attractively priced as well. Chris Vipond has one I like a lot.

Look for new old stock on the Alvarez. The latest ones don't seem to be quite as nice, otherwise they're excellent values, sound great, and are nice and tough.--->JMS

for going in and checking stuff out and being able to pick out different models and try them right there, pianos and stuff have great selection on martins and taylors. its been a while since i've been there but i hear alot of good things about it. i've been meaning to get down there my damn self.

pittsburgh guitars had at one time a thing going where they had Guilds that were blems. by blem i mean a slight inperfection in the finish maybe. nothing noticeable but the prices were slashed on them. that was probobly about 5-6 years ago.

ebay might be a good place to buy right now, prices seem to be down. but it's not like sitting and finding that "one".

isn't the scuttle-butt about GC, that they aint long for this world? if they are it might be hard to get any warranty work done if their out of business. without going through a bunch of bullshit. just sayin'

good luck on the hunt Jim!
