Eric Vincent "Fat Vinny" Kelly passes...

Post by Jim Price »

I'm sorry to have to report this sad news. I received word from Randy Ketner this morning that Eric Kelly - "Fat Vinny" of Fat Vinny & the Wiseguys fame - passed away this morning after suffering a massive heart attack at his home.

I've known Eric for many years, as a friend, musician, and former radio coworker. Although not active lately, Eric was a frequent poster on Rockpage for a number of years, and sometimes could stir things up on the board with discussions about music and political topics.

He was a talented singer and guitar player, and always delivered a robust performance onstage. He and the Wiseguys put out three albums between 1999 and 2005.

Eric was frequently first in line to help out with benefit shows. He and the Wiseguys were involved with a number of benefits I helped organize over the years. He had a big heart, and was passionate about his music and beliefs.

I had just seen Eric about 3-4 weeks ago, performing solo at the Commonplace Coffeehouse's Open Mic night. He was happy that night, and the last thing I remember was his encouraging a young lady who had just recited poetry on the stage for the first time, giving her words about not being afraid to pursue her art.

I'll be dedicating the last 30 minutes of next Sunday's "Homegrown Rocker" (March 1) in memory of Eric, and feature music he sang and performed on.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Eric's parents and family, his Wiseguy bandmates Randy and Jeff, his former bandmates, and all his friends and musical associates.

More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

I never met him but exchanged a few e-mails. A "real" person.

This is truly sad news. Eric and I worked together in one of the iterations of the Lodge Lizzards. He was truly a unique individual.

Our condolences go out to his family.

Wow. I never got to know him or much about him. I only saw he and The Wiseguys once. But over the few years I've been here, I've heard a LOT! about him! Sucks that I never found a real chance to meet a local legend

The Grimm got to play on a few of the same bills as Vin and we all appreciated his style, talent, and, most of all, his personality. He was a great guy who will be sadly missed...my condolences to his family and friends.

That is so sad.....

I got to meet him a few times while we were out playing...

I agree he loved to give gentle ribs, as I remember him busting my chops at Peter C's about having a large Marshall when all any "good" guitar player needed was an old Fender kick amp....

Couldn't say I disagreed, and I respect anyone that can dish it out as well as me, so I knew Eric was the shit.....

What a Shame!! Eric/Vinny was such a good guy - in it for the purity and love of Blues! He and the Wiseguys helped me on a benefit I had in 1997 -Blues for Casey at The Gallitzin Sportsman's along with The Hurricanes and a ton of great musicians. It was a rainy day but we all had a great big love fest that raised $1600 for a little girl in need and we had a wonderful time doing it!

Rest in Peace dear sir, my admiration goes to you...

I looked forward to Eric's visits to the store. We'd talk for awhile then he'd grab a tele (usually) and play for fifteen-twenty minutes. I could have listened all day. He was very smart, up to date, and could talk about any subject without bullshiting his way through. He was very passionate about the blues and music in general. I'll miss those visits.

Wow, this saddens me to hear of his passing. I was in one of the later versions of "Fat Vinny and the Wiseguys" for a brief period. He definitely was a one of a kind. A real down and dirty blues man, I learned a lot about the pocket from jamming with him and Randy. He will definitely be missed.

Rest in Peace Fat Vin...

I was shocked to see Eric's obit this morning. The Wiseguys and I shared billing at Burgi's once, and he and I got to b.s. for a good bit of time. A class act and a true gentleman. My deepest sympathies to family and friends.

Gosh, another "character" passes away.
Vinny (never knew him as Eric, he's always been Vinny to me, I think he liked that) was, like myself, a conversationalist... both of us enjoyed that interaction with people, and our topics were pretty wide-ranging. He was probably a bit more intelligent than most folks realized, and very well-spoken when the situation called. To me, that's a great quality to have.
I jammed with The Wiseguys several times, and I can recall one time in particular when I was going through a pretty rough patch... He basically gave me complete control of his band for a whole set and most of another, and when I got to sing the blues that night, buddy, I was singing the BLUES. He knew without me telling him that he was helping me; and when we later spoke about it, he was characteristically cool about it, and passed it off as nothing I wouldn't do for him. He was right about that.
The man deserves the highest praise I can bestow: He paid his dues, tried his best, and wrote his own songs.
Rest in peace, Vinny.------->JMS

I've been at this for 30 years and have seen a lot of our own come and go.
Eric has been spoken well of and is going to be missed by many of his peers here.
God Bless him and his family.
We've lost one of us.

This is very sad and unexpected. His mother just told Vicki just a few days ago that aside from a touch of the flu, he was doing pretty well. I really liked and respected Vinny and will miss our infamous political duels.
