POISON IVY...errr!
POISON IVY...errr!
Poison Ivy sucks! Let me tell you about poison ivy...it itches, it oozes, it irritating, and right now it has my left eye looking like I just got wallopped with a nice left hook. Oh yeah...my legs look like a 5 year old chicken pox victim's legs. Ahhh...stop the madness!
Just thought I'd give my two cents about poison ivy!

dude ivy sucks...at least it ain't on your fingers!
i work construction in the summer and get ivy alot.
i use calomine lotion until it starts to seep, then i put clorox (yes, bleach!) on a cotton ball and put it on the seeping sores. burns like a sonofabitch, but cuts down on healing time.
ps: i wouldn't use clorox on my eye, but you need to get that oil from the ivy plant off there. lots of soap and water...

Yeah, by day...I'm a self-employeed landscaper...I know where the ivy came from. I tend to wipe my eyes with my shirt sleeve. I typically scratch the snot out of the ivy until it tears...then...alcohol...yes the burn is intense, but for some odd reason it feels so good after all the itchiness. I'm staying away from the scratching of the eye though...my eye will swell shut.

ivy
I've fell victim to the ivy alot working with a lumber mill pulling stumps making roads and such. Calamine is probebly the best bet and time. However, there is a 70 year guy that lives near me and used to be able to make his own home remedy that can clear ivy in two days. Recently he had a stroke and is no longer able to do this. Unfortunatly, I have no idea of what he used to make his lotion. If you think ivy is bad, stay away from poison oak and even worse poison shumack. SUCKS
I have had poison ivy 8 times ( 5 seperate cases just this summer). I do a lot of weeding where I work! I have used alcohol, pure bleach, astringent, and the worst... laquer thinner. I thought "the worse it stings and burns, the more it will kill it." I was wrong...dead wrong. You can't just kill it. Itching doesn't necessarily stop the spread either. It is fact that it can be spread thru your blood stream. The only real cure is time. Keep it dry. If you have big oozing patches, do not cover them w/ gauze or bandages- let it dry out. It took at least a week for each case of poison ivy I had to even start to clear up. They say you eventually build up an immunity to it...BS... Each time I get it, it's terrible!
Hope it goes away soon. I wouldn't wish poison Ivy, oak, or sumac on my worst enemy.

Medically, by the time you feel it itch... it's too late. You can't "cure" it, but you can lessen the symptoms. I had luck pouring bleach in a sink basin, then filling it up with the hottest water you can stand. Do not do this around impressionable children, because you will likely invent new swear-words. It did lessen the sting and itch, though, at least for me.
I weeded our garden once as a teen, and took a pee in the woods... yep, I got it "there." It sucks beyond all that has ever sucked. As teenage boys we all have problems leaving that thing alone anyways, but this... my world was in the vortex there for a week or so.

I must have some immunity to poison ivy as well. I'm involved in several dump site clean-ups each year with the Blair County Chapter of PA Cleanways, and those are often in brush and wooded areas. If I get any poison ivy, it's usually no worse than a few mosquito bites, and usually is gone within a couple of days. I'm still careful to avoid it when I'm doing clean-ups; I figure I've either developed some immunity or have just been lucky and not made hard contact with it.

Take a Benadryl when you go out into the woods, or when you are landscaping. It really helps. I use to get it when the pollen spurs were high. Not anymore!! Benadryl seems to be the trick for me.
I heard Bleach is real good when you already have it.
Take Care and I hope your poison subsides soon!!!!

Well, the good thing is this.. if anyone owes you money or you need to lay the smack down. Go threaton to give them a hug. You are a small "god" for right now. Isn't that sht contageous? If I'm wrong, then.. umm.. just leer at them and try to look angry. Oozing things and nasty glances help get your way with things.

I'm well aware of ALL of the "cures" the initial itch, what doctors say to do, etc. I'm the guy who gets poison ivy from pollen in the air...people say that that can't happen, but I believe it to be a true "myth".
Once, as a child I had poison ivy over 70% of my body...doctor's put me on steroids for two weeks...14 pills the first day, 13 then next, 12 the next, and so on until I was down to one pill. That really sucked!
I've also heard that immune build-up bullcrap. I do know this - If you do get it bad one time, the next few outbreaks will not be as bad. So, maybe that is a slight immunity, but you're still getting it, just not as bad.
Oh well...I've spent the whole day answering this question, "Jason, what's wrong with your eye?" My reply...POISON IVY. This is followed by the cringing of thier face and the OHHHHH remark.

I'd agree with the pollen thing. I have an aunt who is so allergic that she just has to to look at the sht and breaks out into bad bad hives.
Jas, start getting creative. Following "What's wrong with your eye" question, remark "Pissed off a drummer... bad bad mistake. He still owes me fiftybucks." or something like that. lol
