guitar picks ...

Post by felix'apprentice »

so ... i cant seem to find a guitar pick that won't break on me. either im playin way too hard or ive got junk picks. im thinking its a combo of both. i did get these new fender medium guage picks but i keep shaving the sides off of them ... if that makes sense....i guess my question is, where can i find medium gauge .. like flexibles picks that won't break in the middle of a song?

thanks for all your help!

i've always used dunlops... gator grips. best ever in my opinion.

The shaving down of the sides is, more than likely, how you're strumming.

I turn the pick to the side if I'm playing electric and want to get a more "acoustic-y"
sound. Kind of more jangly. Might be one aspect to look into.

I've used Fender Meds for a long time and have VERY rarely broken one and
I pick pretty hard.

Regradless, am always interested in trying out something new. Let us know how
the Davas work for you.

Im glad you said that about playing with the side of the pick, i thought maybe i was holding my pick wrong all this time and didnt notice. i recently changed from acoustic to electric - thats probably why i just noticed the shaving down of the picks. i was using the fender mediums - then i got cheap. i guess thats what i get, im ordering some davas today. should know how they work by the weekend. :D

thanks all.

I've never broken a pick ever. I have giant heavy guage ones for bass, and a light guage fender pick I've had for years I mess around on acousitc guitar with.

I always had better luck with nylon picks like Dunlops when it comes to longevity. All it takes is one pick slide with a fender pick and it's toast.
... and then the wheel fell off.

Jazz III's are great picks. They come in two colors/hardness levels or whatever. Nice and small which is nice for fast, accurate playing. They won't break, and should last a while unless you are over playing.

The only picks that I don't break are Dunlop Tortex. Just about everything else I've tried shreds or crumbles to pieces. They wear pretty well too. You can get them in regular shape and a few jazz styles. If you like thin picks, you want the .05mm. Medium is .06mm. Most music stores have them.

You might want to try the Dunlop Rhino picks too. I break them, but you might not...they feel a lot more like regular picks.

Yeah, I think they are .05 or .06. They actually bend pretty easy. But then again, have you seen what he uses for strings??

Hmm, that manhole cover almost looks plastic.

Ive ended up usin those damn 12's too. Had problems with the Mangan (spelling) strings, had a set where on the D and G string, the winding came off, then put on another set and the winding came of the G again. They just dont make G strings like they used to. Trying D'Addario Jazz Light 12's now...

Nobody has SIT's in 12s, so.. uh...

Have you seen what he uses for fingers? His hands are the size of hubcaps, and he's got carpenter hands, mostly just callous and bone. --->JMS
