pedal order advice
pedal order advice
any advice on a good order for my pedals? i currently have them like this on my board through my effects loop:
fx loop out > boss tu15 tuner > ernie ball wah > mxr dyna comp > analog man ts-9 silver mod tube screamer > ibanez ts-9dx turbo tube screamer > boss dd3 delay > analog man clone chorus > boss rc20 loop station plus dual footswitches > fx loop in
does that seem like the best order?

so you are saying to run all the time bassed stuff through the fx loop? any particular reason? the problem is that i want to keep everything on a pedal board to make it easier to lug around.
i guess the main question is if i should put the chorus before or after the delay. i also saw on a web site that i should put the delay completely last, even after the looper.

What it comes down to is distortion. Some effects sound better before the sound gets distorted and some sound better after the sound is distorted.VinceM25 wrote:so you are saying to run all the time bassed stuff through the fx loop? any particular reason? the problem is that i want to keep everything on a pedal board to make it easier to lug around.

In general, compression, wah & more distortion work better before the preamp distortion. By the same token, and in general, modulation and delay effects sound better after the preamp distortion.
It sounds better to chorus, flange, phase, delay/reverb a distorted signal than it does to distort a chorus, flange, phase and delay/reverb signal.

I agree.lonewolf wrote:It sounds better to chorus, flange, phase, delay/reverb a distorted signal than it does to distort a chorus, flange, phase and delay/reverb signal.
While there are no rules so to speak, some just sound "better" than others.
I have never had much luck with effects loops, I always ran stuff into the front of the amp, but then again I only use distortion and delay... maybe some chorus or flange from time to time...
I used to have a link to a pedal board diagram that showed popular setups and configurations, but I cant seem to find it. Scott and Jeff are on the same page, so try their methods.
Usually you want the "cleanest" or "colored" sounds before your distortion/overdrive pedal, but then again sometimes you'll have better results with a Chorus or Flange after the Distortion.
Whatever works best for ya I guess.
thanks guys, everyone seems to be tellin me the same thing. i think i can figure out a way to do that and still keep everything on my pedal board. only have to move a couple things.

The way that I used to do it was to have the right side of my board be the "out front" effects. Then I plugged into and out of those and ran the rest of the effects with their own cables back to the effects loop.VinceM25 wrote:thanks guys, everyone seems to be tellin me the same thing. i think i can figure out a way to do that and still keep everything on my pedal board. only have to move a couple things.
I got tired of that, so I just run everything out front now.

The noise gate should be the 1st thing in your FX loop...unless...if you add an EQ to the FX loop, it should go before the noise gate.
This is because you want to gate the items that are making the noise.
The noisiest items in a guitar chain are those that generate distortion like OD boxes and hot preamps. While an EQ itself may not be noisy, it can add more gain to the signal and amplify the noise.

thanks guys i think i got it all worked out. and by the way, the Analog.man pedals that i have (the chorus and silver modded ts-9 tube screamer) are the two best pedals i have ever owned by far. the chorus is so much better than any other chorus ive ever played its amazing. it makes the boss chorus sound like a toy. and the tube screamer has that dirtyness but still leaves the tone of your guitar, its amazing.
