I don't know about recent history, but before 1995, they didn't.

Rush incognito couldn't get a gig at the Brewery or Cafe 210, et al. without a following. They played the same 6 bands every week and those bands all alternated days at different clubs. A band had to break up before an opening came up. It was ALL about the money.

The only way new musicians could get stage time was to play for nothing on open mic night.

From what I've heard, I must agree with lonewolf....even 'back then' I had always heard that SC was absolutely the hardest place to play around here because of the way they schedule (WAY in advance). At least now they have that open mic night at (I think?) Bar Bleu? Or something called a Roustabout? That is a new thing, before that, HARD to get a gig in SC.

I hate it when people call it "the scene"...

"the scene" this... "the scene" that... protect "the scene", man!...

Sorry... Just always been one of my pet peeves.

Anyway... The area is going to be seeing some hard times. Bar owners are going to start blaming anything but their own backwards business habits being compounded by a flaccid economy on the downturn in their sales. This ASCAP stuff is going to be the easy way for them to just stop doing anything but slinging booze. I believe it was already stated, if they can't afford that fee, then bands weren't really making them a lot of money. Its just quickened what was already on the horizon.

I feel this is going to be whats played out for the next few years:
Anyone can be addicted to alcohol (especially in hard times)... only musicians are addicted to music.

PS it took my old Ska band about 6 months of doing local all-ages shows before we got our first opening slot at the Crowbar. Just like anything it has just as much to do with who you know, as what you do (or play)..

I'm attending the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg in a few weeks. I'm sure there will be plenty of discussion about some of the issues raised here, from the impact of the economy on music, to ASCAP/BMI issues and more. I'll report any findings I might discover.

Lonewolf: Thanks for posting that site. I checked it out when you posted it last week. Good Stuff!

JackANSI: What Ska Band were you in? I saw a ton of ska shows @ the Crowbar. Probably saw your band.

One of my pet peeves is when people use the present perfect tense of the word "saw" when it calls for simple past tense.

"Hey, I seen you yesterday!" or "Remember that movie we seen last week? It rocked!"

YES!

True that State's always been a hassle to get into, especially when
coming from the "outside"and there's always been the vertical booking
issue , but it also used to be that almost any night of the week you could
go see someone playing most places, and be pretty certain they'd be
really good.

ALSO, and just had this pointed out me, that the MATERIAL that works
a lot of places doesn't always work for the crowds in State. More so "back
then" than now, no doubt. Were, and still are, playing to a very different
demographic than anywhere else.

Not to mention that a lot more bands were doing original stuff throughout
a night and a lot of that stuff was really good, could be heard on the radio,
and local music had actual local support.

Also used to have more "touring", regional, or even lower/mid level
nationals, if not bigger names. Not even just at Crowbar, but Café 210,
etc. and even at Stoney's, when it was around.

But, part of the problem of getting in there is that those who were in
regular rotation WERE that good. Now, too often, it seems like a lot
of them are just filler.

Granted, certainly not always the case. Still have the various Andy
Tollins projects, Spider Kelly, Tyne and the Fastline, McCloskey's
assorted bands, and others, doing regular gigs, plus, Pushing Red,
Mia Mafia and G211 all play over there.

But, it's still not as active or vibrant as it used to be.

Note: APPARENTLY, Lulu's has some cool, and varied, touring acts
from time-to-time (Or...did...if they're still open....), but does a horrible
job at letting it be known.

i know that the former owners of the castle paid fees to ascap/bmi, they were able to afford the fees and still make a profit just like the thousands of other venues in this country. i'm really suprised that the present owner(s) didn't keep up with it...seriously, it's common knowlegde in this business. as a published songwriter i'm thankfull for performing rights organizations like ascap, bmi, or sesac as long as they are reasonable with what they charge venues in fees. there has got to be a way for the castle to settle up without breaking the bank (i hope so anyway).

according to our publisher we're supposed to be getting our first check from bmi sometime around april. probably for a whopping $4.75.....not much but i'll be sure to spend it at the castle.

Good post. I think the bar owners might just figure if nobody's come around checking on their license, nobody will. It's like my fishing license... I haven't been stopped by a fish warden in years, so I don't have to buy a license, right? No sir, I buy the license, if for no other reason than to support the guys who take care of the fish I enjoy catching.--->JMS
