These guys have always been one of my favorite bands from the 80s, and I picked up the new album by them last night. I only listened to about three tracks, and I'm impressed. They didn't reinvent the wheel with this release, but it's exactly what one would expect from Extreme: killer vocal harmonies, slammin' bass, and Nuno running amok. I dig his tone on this release. He has the fullness of Pornograffiti but there's still that thinner edge he had going on from Waiting for the Punchline. It's all of the original members except the drummer. I remember that Paul Geary was the head of an artist management company, so maybe he preferred his desk job gig.

Anyone else listen to this disk? What do you think?

I also haven't had a chance to check this new album out, but definitely will. One of my earliest music memories was watching Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and during the mall rampage scene, Beethoven was playing this awesome song on the keyboards, which immediately amazed and inspired me. Before that, I had only heard the 60s and 70s records of my parents (which have also influenced me), but this some something different and I immediately fell in love with the song and style. It was many years later that I found out the song was Play With Me by Extreme.

Also, recently I saw Dee Snider on some hard rock documentary complaining about Extreme and Tesla and others for ruining "metal" by slowing things down and going unplugged with More Than Words and Signs respectively, but in my opinion both Extreme and Tesla rock way more than Twisted Sister ever did. Thanks for reminding me about this great band!

Hayf and I were listening to Extreme on the snowy ride to Huntingdon last Saturday. I hadn't heard them for many years, and I had forgotten how badass Nuno was and is! "Get the Funk Out" not sure if that's the title or the hook but man, that song is awesome.

One of my favorite bands, ever. Check out the third album, called "III Sides To Every Story". There's a song on there called "Cupid's Dead" that shows how much of a badass bass player Pat Badger is. He, Nuno, and Paul Geary take a funk-based solo where Paul is laying down a great groove, and Nuno and Pat are playing the solo line. Any bassist that can hang with Nuno is a total badass.

Here's the album version. The whole song is totally worth listening to, but if you get impatient, just drag the slider to 3:00.

No, thank god. (Love Mike, but he was a horrible fit in Extreme.) Their drummer is Kevin Figueiredo, from Nuno's bands DramaGods and Satellite Party. Paul Geary is apparently managing the band now, but will not be playing with them.

Extreme had some good stuff. Their last album was a bit rawer,
less slick, which I liked.

DramaGods is/was a great band. Lot of cool tunes, just needed the
razor a bit. But, Bettencort's singing and playing are terrific on there.

Satellite Party is a pretty odd cast of characters...and somehow or
another they got Perry Farrell's voice to not sound so...Farrell-esque.

On a lot of the S.P. stuff, he's about the last person I'd have guessed
is playing. Much of it's really understated,, more background-y/
textural.

Some of the music sounds almost Morrissey-like.

May have to check out the Extreme album.

Oh yeah, the one new album I've been giving a lot of listens is
Filter's "Anthems for the Damned". Good stuff.

I finally got to listen to the whole disc the other night, and I must say that it kicks immense amounts of assitude. I think that this album has some of their best ballads and the whole thing is probably one of their most diverse releases.

Dave, I totally agree about Waiting for the Punchline. It was definitely more raw than their previous releases, but there are so many underated tunes from that album: There is No God, Cynical, Shadowboxing, and Pat Badger's bass line on No Respect is one of my favorites.
