I have to agree with Scott on this one. There was a lot of great music this year. You just can't base your conclusion on Top 40 radio and how many records Kayne West sold this year.

Sticks That Made Thunder by The Steeldrivers-- EXCELLENT song about a Civil War battle from the viewpoint of an ancient tree on the battlefield who watched it all happen. Not only is it poetic and visual, the melody is haunting, and actually SOUNDS like the Civil War. As close to perfect as anyone's come in awhile. Every song on the album is a keeper.
3 x 5 by The Infamous Stringdusters-- Originally written by John Mayer, it's about a musician who travels the world and sends home pictures to his girlfriend... they broke up and he can no longer send her the pictures to live vicariously through. Amazing arrangement and musicianship on this one.
Can We Find Forgiveness by Jim Lauderdale-- One of country and Americana's greatest-ever songwriters, Lauderdale has a way of taking deep but simple lyrics, adding hooks you wish you could compose, and making songs that grab you and force you to listen. This one takes George Jones vocal style (climbing an entire octave in one or two lines, then swooping back down, etc.) and tells the listener to look at his own life before finding fault in others. Add production and jaw-dropping dobro work, and how can you lose? Honorable Mention: Are You Having Second Thoughts, from the same album, Bluegrass Diaries.
My Cousin Willard by The Weedhawks-- The Weedhawks are a duo from Morgantown WV who play a hybrid of bluegrass and rockabilly, spiked with witty lyrics about sex, drugs, and redneck life in general. My Cousin Willard is about a woman who takes care of her invalid father, and sometimes sneaks out to her cousin's house to listen to the radio and dance. Bobby Lane, the writer, told me he was talking to a fan once, and simply wrote down everything she said verbatim, then arranged it so it fit in a song structure. The Weedhawks are one of those acts that just be huge if the right people heard them, their live shows are the most entertaining thing I've seen in a VERY long time.
