Name Changes
Hey, My band and I are considering changing our name. We've been High Tide for about 7 years. We had a change in our line up about 2 years ago and we changed the spelling to Hi Tyde. We should have changed it then. The thing is that there are at least 7 other bands called High Tide, with various spellings, on the net. We are doing origionals now too. I was for the change untill I started asking others what they thought. Everyone I've asked thinks we should leave it, bar owners included. I wonder if it will affect our "attendance", or what else, I don't know? Just trying to weigh the pros and cons of it. Any advice or input appriciated...
Rob, I would think it will take awhile for people to realize who you are again, you may get the situation " Who's playing at ????? " " New name here " " oh, never heard them let go her a band we know" It may work quik in your home town but elsewhere it may take a little longer.
If you are basically going to be the same band, I say keep the name, if something within the band changes, maybe its time for a name change.
As far as other bands having that name on the net, try some new ideas...... chances are those names are taken too, I went to that band name registery and there are like 4 Never Enoughs in the U.S. right now. But what the hell, We'll change it when we have to.
Just my opinion.

Rob... though we've never formally met, I've heard you guys a few times back in the day and in this general area when the name Hi Tyde comes up, everyone thinks of one band.... yours!
I say keep it until someone threatens some sort of infringement... I hear "Hi Tyde" and think "yeah, they rock!" I would be worried about people not recognizing a new name and a drop in attendance...
Just my $.02

I think if you're going to try to do the impossible and actually go somewhere, and were on the verge of breaking into the big time then a name change might be in order. If you are content with being a local band and don't have rock-star aspirations, then you have to keep the name. Name/Brand recognition is important to keeping a good thing going.

Do what IN did. For a while, in the title, put your new band name and then add the tag line "Formerly such and such." People will catch on quickly if you do that, I think.

I always thought "Pet my whookie" would be a genious name.
Your band is the only I ever think of when I hear High Tide. I think that if you do change it, do what he said about the "Formerly known as".. it will help out. And the Zen name is cool.

I'll be the one left standing behind you, looking the other way as you glance back at what you've lost.

It really depends on the approach you guys are taking. If you're trying for bigger and better, you might want to try and consider changing it because in the end it's only going to matter to the person that holds the trademark of the name. If you're just looking to stay in this area doing what you're currently doing now, keep the name because it's what everyone remembers you by. Don't know if that helps you out or not.
